About Phillip
I am a qualified and experienced secondary Social Studies teacher in New Zealand, with proven classroom experience teaching Year 7–13 students across a range of abilities and learning needs. My work is grounded in the New Zealand Curriculum and NCEA, and I understand both the academic expectations and the pressures students face. I approach tutoring with a strong focus on clarity, structure, and confidence. Lessons are carefully planned, clearly explained, and tailored to each student’s goals—whether that is strengthening core understanding, improving writing and source analysis, or preparing for NCEA assessments and exams. I take the time to ensure students understand how to approach tasks, not just what the content is. Professionalism is central to my practice. I provide reliable, well-prepared lessons, clear communication with students and families, and a calm, respectful learning environment. Students are encouraged to ask questions, take intellectual risks, and build confidence in their own thinking. I work with Year 7–13 learners, including NCEA Level 1–3 students, and support both in-person tutoring in Auckland and online sessions. My goal is to help students feel capable, prepared, and supported—so they can approach their learning with confidence.

My Approach to Tutoring & Teaching
My tutoring approach is student-centred, structured, and outcomes-focused. I tailor each lesson to the learner’s needs, whether that’s building foundational understanding, improving exam technique, or gaining confidence with assessments and writing.
I use a mix of guided discussion, explicit teaching, worked examples, and practice tasks. For Social Studies, this includes unpacking key concepts, modelling strong paragraph and essay structures, analysing sources, and linking ideas clearly to assessment criteria (especially for NCEA). I place a strong emphasis on thinking skills, clarity of expression, and exam readiness, not just memorisation.
A typical lesson runs for 60 minutes, though longer sessions can be arranged if needed (especially for senior students working on internal assessments or exam preparation). Lessons usually include:
A short check-in and goal-setting
Explicit teaching or modelling
Guided practice and feedback
Clear next steps or revision tasks
I am a qualified and experienced secondary teacher in New Zealand, with classroom experience teaching Year 7–13 Social Sciences and supporting students across different ability levels. I am familiar with the New Zealand Curriculum and NCEA requirements, and I focus on helping students understand how to succeed, not just what to learn.
My lessons are suited for Year 7–13 students, including:
- Intermediate and junior secondary students building core skills
- NCEA Level 1–3 students needing support with internals or exams
- Students who want to improve confidence, structure, and academic writing
I aim to create a calm, supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and developing real confidence in their learning.
