About Suki

Hello, I am Suki! I am a dedicated calligrapher and cultural practitioner based right here in Edinburgh. I have been devoted to the art of Chinese calligraphy for over 20 years, and I have spent the last decade teaching students of all ages and backgrounds.

While I have been fortunate enough to exhibit my work publicly and receive awards over the years, my greatest joy has always come from sharing this elegant tradition with others in a relaxed, everyday setting.

I take great pride in creating a warm, encouraging, and highly supportive environment where you can unwind completely. I am a very patient teacher, and I absolutely love watching my students build confidence and find their own unique rhythm with the brush. Whether you are holding a calligraphy brush for the very first time or looking to gently refine your existing skills, I am here to guide you every step of the way.

About the lesson

My lessons are thoughtfully designed for both complete beginners and intermediate students. I focus on building a strong, comfortable foundation in brush control, character structure, and ink flow, while also exploring the meditative and calming philosophy behind the practice.

I specialise in teaching four distinct traditional scripts:
• Regular Script (Kai Shu) for clear and steady foundations
• Clerical Script (Li Shu) for elegant, ancient rhythms
• Seal Script (Zhuan Shu) for exploring historical origins
• Running Script (Xing Shu) for a more fluid, expressive style

A typical lesson lasts between 60 and 90 minutes. We move at a gentle, comfortable pace, ensuring you truly enjoy the quiet, grounding process of preparing ink and putting brush to paper. These classes are perfect for anyone seeking a creative outlet, a mindful hobby, or a deeper connection to traditional Chinese aesthetics.

I cannot recommend Suki highly enough! Having practiced language and cultural exchange with her, I can confidently say she is an incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and inspiring tutor. With her academic background from Peking University and her deep understanding of traditional Chinese arts, she brings so much more to the table than just standard vocabulary and grammar. She has a unique ability to explain complex cultural nuances that textbooks usually miss. Her teaching style is engaging, perfectly tailored to individual needs, and always delivered with such warmth. If you are looking to truly master Mandarin or Cantonese while gaining a genuine understanding of the culture, Suki is the absolute best guide you could ask for.
