About Kate
I'm a second year Natural Sciences student at the University of Bath, reading Biology with Pharmacology. I finished my A Levels a couple of years ago and I completely remember the stress of the 'big exams' and all the worries that come with it, and I put a lot of time into working out how to work with the A Level Biology mark schemes and not against them (a feeling many A Level Biology students are aware of!). I'm an experienced tutor and having been tutoring for two years now, and the last year I've focused on A Level Biology. I'm also a volunteer tutor with Tutor the Nation, where I've been working with tutees for 5 months on A level Biology students (mixture of WJEC and OCR, although I'm happy to tutor any exam board). I have tutored GCSE Maths for a year on this platform as well. I'm a really enthusiastic and patient person - I will always listen to any questions and explain the same topic in as many different ways until the student feels happy and confident with the knowledge. I'm a firm believer in slow and steady wins the race - I'll push to try the trickier questions but often with some form extra support.

I'm a student-led tutor - I know what the workload is like during A Levels - so the lessons are driven by what the student needs. I can create a structured plan of the content to be covered matched with core exam practice, or I can plan each week based on the student's needs and requests (a method that works very well with my current students). The student would be able to request a content-focused lesson or an exam practice lesson, both are highly interactive and led by the student - I never lecture unless I absolutely can't avoid it. Most of the time I'll aim for a mixture of both, with further practice available for the student should that be requested. An Example Lesson Plan(s) on Photosynthesis: Warm up: Diagram-prompted key word recall task on structure of chloroplasts and chlorophyll membranes Task 1: Flow Diagram - use the image prompts to discuss in detail the light dependent reaction. (Tangents can include light energy, oxidation reactions, electron transport chains, pigments). Start with PSI and move backwards (Biological structures are named very illogically!) to PSII, discuss photolysis. Zoom in on two pathways: cyclic and z pathway. Pause. Assess whether recap, practice questions or more content is appropriate Task 2: Calvin Cycle - draw the cycle out under the student's guidance. Focus on the number of carbons (reinforced electron carriers and oxidation reactions) Assess again for relevant further steps This lesson plan can be taught as a faster recap or slowly in great depth over 2 or more lessons. The workload at A Level is sufficiently high already, that I don't set any additional homework, but every week I will make relevant practice questions available to the student with the offer that I'll mark them for the student. Quite often I'll start the next lesson with those questions, either going through the answers if the student had time to complete them or use them as a warm up. Lessons are an hour long with a 10 minute break.

Kate has been tutoring me in my biology A-level for a few months now and she has been so incredibly helpful. Despite being shy at the start, I immediately felt welcomed and listened to. She accommodates her lessons based on the topics I'm struggling with, and I leave with a whole new understanding. She puts knowledge into practice with a range of questions, which has definitely boosted my confidence particularly in the more challenging topics. She also goes at my pace, allowing me to take as much time as I need when I'm finding something difficult. 100% recommend!!
I am a year 13 A level student and Kate has been tutoring me in biology to prepare me for my final exam. She is a lovely teacher who works through content with you in a clear and thorough way, by using mind maps, exam questions and diagrams. Kate manages to simplify difficult concepts in a way my teachers haven’t been able to. She has also been both flexible with session times and super reliable. I would recommend her!
Kate is such a lovely and reliable person. She is always very patient and I couldn’t recommend her more! She has an amazing understanding of maths, so can approach things from many different angles and will always ensure you feel you have gained a better understanding after every session.

I teach competently in person and across the webcam - since it's student-led, I maintain a very high level of student engagement. I will ask for the camera to be on, but I'm very flexible when it stays off and I have yet to notice a drop in student engagement when their camera is off. I treat them like adults, and I have found this a successful method for making the lesson a worthwhile use of their time.
