I believe great writing comes from understanding core principles, not memorizing formulas. My teaching focuses on helping students think critically about texts and express their ideas clearly and confidently. I use a mix of direct instruction, modeling, and hands-on practice to make challenging concepts manageable and engaging.
Teaching Methods & Techniques
• Active Learning: Students write during lessons, applying strategies immediately.
• Step-by-Step Frameworks: Clear, repeatable templates for essays (thesis, body paragraphs, analysis).
• Personalized Feedback: Specific, actionable suggestions tailored to each student’s strengths and growth areas.
• Relatable Examples: I use language and examples that resonate with teens today, making lessons less intimidating and more relevant.
• Exam Strategies: Time management, prompt analysis, and understanding the AP scoring rubric.
Typical Lesson Plan
1. Warm-Up & Review: Quick discussion or review of last session’s work.
2. New Concept Introduction: Explain and model a key writing strategy or rhetorical technique.
3. Guided Practice: Students work on targeted exercises with my support.
4. Application: Draft part of an essay or respond to a prompt using the new skill.
5. Feedback & Reflection: Review work together, discuss improvements, and set goals for next session.
What Sets Me Apart
As a young, relatable tutor who’s recently taught AP Lang, I understand the pressures students face today. I’m close enough in age to connect authentically, yet experienced enough to know exactly what examiners want. My lessons are engaging, practical, and confidence-building — turning writing anxiety into real progress.
