About Alex
Following a successful career in the financial services industry as an insurance underwriter I decided I wanted to pursue a second career in the chemical sciences. I returned to education as a mature student and studied chemistry full time at university. I successfully completed my course and was awarded a first-class degree. I thoroughly enjoyed studying chemistry and had a particular interest in organic chemistry, with a real thirst for research. After consideration I decided to continue my studies with a research master’s degree (MRes) in organic chemistry applied to drug discovery, at UCL. I successfully complete the MRes and decided I wanted to undertake a much longer piece of research so I applied for an organic chemistry PhD position at Kingston University London and was awarded a fully funded studentship. During the course of my PhD, I contributed to the delivery of teaching for undergraduate classes, demonstrating and taking practical classes. During the course of my studies, I discovered an interest and passion for teaching. The thing that makes it so worthwhile is the light bulb moment when a student ‘gets it’ – there is nothing more rewarding.

My teaching approach is tailored to you by first understanding the most effective way you learn whether visual and colourful or whether you may learn from a more traditional and methodical approach. Having established the topics to be covered, we will first learn basic fundamental principles and definitions relating to a specific topic, followed by exploration of the topic in more detail. We will then apply what we have learned to specific worked examples and problem solving. We will cover exam technique and attempt past exam papers so that you are fully prepared for your end of module and / or final exam. Teaching is structured with 1 hour contact sessions including workshops to apply what you have learned. I am an experienced chemistry tutor in the final writing up stage of my chemistry PhD. I hold a BSc (Hons) in chemistry and an MRes in organic chemistry applied to drug discovery. I am able to help with chemistry tutoring at all levels from GCSE upwards.
