About Gokhan

I'm Dr Gokhan Guler, a Principal Data & AI Architect. Security is built into everything I design: my enterprise data and AI platforms go through cyber and architecture review boards, I work with identity, key management and network controls on Azure, AWS and Google Cloud every week, and I assess the security and governance of AI agents for organisations adopting them. Before that I spent seven years in information management and security services, and I hold ISACA's CISM and CISA certifications. My earlier engineering career was in the defence sector, where security is a discipline rather than a department. I hold a PhD in engineering and computer science.

I've taught for more than twenty years at undergraduate and postgraduate level and delivered over 2,000 hours of one-to-one tutoring since 2017. My students have come from Oxford, Imperial College London, UCL, Manchester, Bristol, Queen Mary, Westminster and Maastricht, among others.

I teach security risk-first: what are you protecting, from whom, and at what cost — then the controls. Every concept becomes a real artefact you can reuse, and every certification domain gets practice questions until the reasoning is automatic. Students range from second-year computer scientists to IT managers taking on their first security remit.

Away from work you'll find me with my family, who are my biggest supporters in all of this.

I teach Cyber Security to university students on security-engineering, computer-science and information-systems modules (undergraduate to MSc), to IT professionals moving into security roles, and to managers who need to understand risk and governance. I come at it as a security architect and governance specialist rather than a penetration tester — which is what most modules, most certifications and most security jobs actually need.

WHAT WE WORK ON

- Fundamentals — the CIA triad, threat modelling (STRIDE, attack trees), cryptography (symmetric and asymmetric, hashing, PKI, TLS), authentication and access control (MFA, OAuth and OIDC, zero trust), network security (firewalls, segmentation, IDS/IPS, VPNs), and the common vulnerability classes (OWASP Top 10, injection, misconfiguration).

- Cloud security — identity and access on Azure, AWS and Google Cloud, key management, network design, logging and monitoring, the shared-responsibility model, and securing data platforms: the work I do day to day.

- AI security — securing LLM applications and agents (OWASP Top 10 for LLMs, prompt injection, data leakage, tool misuse), AI governance frameworks (NIST AI RMF, ISO 42001, the EU AI Act), and using AI in security operations.

- Risk, governance and compliance — ISO 27001 and 27005, NIST CSF, risk assessment and treatment, security policies, audit and assurance, incident response planning, business continuity, GDPR essentials.

- Certification syllabi — CompTIA Security+, CISSP, CISM, CISA, ISO 27001 Lead Implementer, and the cloud security tracks (AZ-500, AWS Security Specialty), taught domain by domain with practice questions.

- Coursework, dissertations and projects — security assessments, risk registers, threat models, critical essays and security-engineering assignments. You write it; I review and challenge it.

RECENT STUDENT WORK
Security Engineering modules at UCL and Queen Mary · risk-management and governance coaching for professionals moving into cyber roles · AI-agent security and governance assessments in my architecture work.

HOW SESSIONS RUN
Online, with screen-sharing. We work on real artefacts — a threat model, a risk register, a cloud security review — and in a sandbox when hands-on practice helps. You keep every template and note. The first (free) session is a diagnostic: we map your module, certification or target role against your deadlines and agree a plan. I reply within a few hours.

I help you understand and produce your own work — assignments and reports are yours; I supervise, explain and challenge. I don't teach attacks on systems you don't own.
