Application of knowledge is what separates grade seven and grade nine students, the percentage difference between those grades is slim, however to gain those last few marks, understanding is tested rather than content knowledge. Although memorising definitions is important, students must also be able to apply that same knowledge to different situations and scenarios and I believe the only way to do that is to understand the content and it’s relevance so thoroughly that exam boards can’t confuse or panic you in tests. Active discussion, using metaphors and examples, recognising daily applications in our environment, having students explain in their own words so that they hear their voice explaining it to themselves- these all play a key role in deepening a students understanding to gain those high marks.
But more importantly, keeping the content engaging so students are motivated to put in the work.
