About Dr Scott

Hello, I'm Scott, a PhD-qualified science tutor and academic coach with over 12 years of professional tutoring experience.

I've worked with more than 500 students from the UK and internationally, helping them strengthen their subject knowledge, improve examination performance and work towards ambitious academic goals.

I specialise in A-Level Chemistry and also provide GCSE and IGCSE tuition in Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Mathematics.

My approach combines rigorous subject teaching, effective examination preparation and personalised academic coaching. Whether you're aiming for the highest grades, preparing for a competitive university course or struggling with a particular subject, my goal is to help you make meaningful, measurable progress.

About Me

I hold a PhD in Geochemistry from Durham University, where I previously completed my undergraduate degree with First-Class Honours.

Alongside my academic background, I've developed extensive experience in private tuition, educational consulting and academic performance coaching.

I've also undertaken professional training in psychometric assessment, personality and ability testing through the University of Cambridge, as well as personal performance coaching.

My work in education has included contributions to educational technology, published research and an appearance on the BBC Victoria Derbyshire programme discussing private tuition.

Throughout my tutoring career, I've had the privilege of supporting students from leading independent schools, international schools and a wide range of academic backgrounds.

Subjects and Specialisms

A-Level Chemistry — My Primary Specialism

I provide comprehensive A-Level Chemistry tuition across the major UK examination boards, including AQA, OCR and Edexcel.

My teaching focuses on developing a thorough understanding of the underlying chemistry, applying that knowledge to unfamiliar problems and mastering the examination techniques required for high grades.

I particularly enjoy working with ambitious students preparing for competitive STEM university courses, including Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine and Natural Sciences.

GCSE and IGCSE Tuition

I also offer individual tuition in:

Chemistry

Biology

Physics

Mathematics

Lessons are tailored to the student's examination board, current attainment and academic objectives.

My Teaching Approach

I believe exceptional tuition involves much more than simply explaining the syllabus.

Every student has different strengths, weaknesses, learning habits and academic goals. My approach is therefore built around three key principles:

1. Deep Subject Understanding

Developing a strong conceptual foundation rather than relying solely on memorisation. Students learn not just what the correct answer is, but why it is correct.

2. Examination Mastery

Using carefully selected past-paper questions, mark schemes and examiner reports to develop examination technique, accurate scientific communication and confidence with unfamiliar questions.

3. Personalised Academic Coaching

Helping students develop effective study strategies, stronger organisational skills, independent learning habits and a structured approach to revision.

During our initial sessions, we'll identify your priorities and develop a personalised plan for improvement.

Resources and Progress Tracking

Students benefit from access to my collection of examination resources, developed and refined throughout my tutoring career.

These include past examination papers, mark schemes, examiner reports, topic-based questions and additional revision materials.

Where appropriate, I also use progress-tracking tools to identify knowledge gaps, monitor improvement and direct our attention towards the areas that will have the greatest impact.

The intention is to make every lesson purposeful, efficient and relevant to the student's goals.

Online and In-Person Tuition

I offer both online tuition and face-to-face lessons in selected local areas.

My online lessons use an interactive teaching platform that allows students to revisit previous sessions and review explanations between lessons.

Online tuition provides the same individual attention and tailored teaching as in-person lessons, with the additional convenience of learning from home.

For families preferring face-to-face support, home tuition is also available, subject to location and availability.

University Preparation and Academic Coaching

Alongside subject tuition, I can support students with academic planning, university course selection, effective independent study and preparation for demanding STEM degree programmes.

I have particular experience helping students develop the knowledge, discipline and examination skills needed to pursue ambitious academic goals.

Getting Started

Choosing the right tutor is an important decision.

I encourage you to read the reviews from my previous students and parents to learn more about their experiences.

If you'd like to discuss your academic goals, the challenges you're facing or how my tuition could help, please get in touch.

I look forward to hearing from you.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My passion for tutoring started while teaching undergraduates during my
PhD at Durham between 2008 and 2012. I quickly discovered that I had a passion for teaching others and it was something that came naturally to me.
Through travelling, I became fascinated with the Earth and how it worked. Particularly mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes and climate, so I decided to take a degree in Geology. My undergraduate degree provided me with an excellent understanding of all aspects of science, including palaeontology (biology), geochemistry and geophysics. Later I went on to specialise in geochemistry for my PhD, studying volcanoes from across SE Asia.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach 4 subjects in total. Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths at GCSE; and Biology, Chemistry and Physics at A-Level. My specialist subject is Chemistry, as that, is the one I’m most passionate about and studied at the highest level.

I particularly enjoy teaching organic chemistry, as there is so much synergy between that and biology. For example, if you understand how certain organic compounds are formed and work you will develop a much greater understanding of biological systems; such as nutrition, hormones, genetics and respiration. I’ve found that often what you learn in one area of science can be applied in multiple other areas and gives you a greater depth of understanding.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Famous role models include the likes of Richard Feynman and Sigmund Freud. The former had an amazing ability to take complex topics and simplify them, which is not always an easy thing to do.

The teacher who had the greatest influence on me personally was my geochemistry lecturer. He was an extremely extroverted and eccentric guy (who would often be kept away on open days), wore jesus sandals all year round and sported a huge beard. As intimidating as he was, you could tell the passion he had for what he was teaching. He explained concepts through stories and helped develop my love for geochemistry. I’m not sure I would have gone on to do a PhD had it not been for his influence.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Being a great academic or teacher does not necessarily mean you’ll be a great tutor. A great tutor is also a coach and mentor to a student. Someone, who has the ability to empathise, inspire, set goals, and help organise a student to achieve their potential.

Tutoring is an art and a science. There are proven strategies for helping students achieve great results, but these can differ based on the individual goals, personality, ability and skill level That’s why coaching is such an important addition to teaching. Every student is unique and discovering that uniqueness is the key to getting great results. I have supported my academic knowledge by training in the fields of coaching and psychometric assessments to become a better tutor.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

At school, I was always told to follow my passion, which I believed to also be the thing which came more naturally to me. Back then, this was art. I could draw well. However, following A-Levels and a bunch of work experience days at graphic design companies, I realised that, this was not something that would directly translate into a career I wanted to pursue. Nor use much of the freehand drawing skills I had.

Following a few gap years, I decided to go back and study a science degree, which required me to take A-Levels in Chemistry, Maths and Physics. Believing I was not as good at these subjects, it took a long time for me to gain confidence in them, but once I did, I was able to reach the highest of levels and achievements in them. This taught me a valuable lesson to not think of myself as ‘good’ or ‘bad’
at something, but instead, focus on getting better at them over time. The creative side I naturally had as a kid is still very much being used every day in my tutoring.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

In addition to my PhD, I earned a 1st class Masters's degree and an award for academic excellence. It didn’t come easy though. I was always more creative than analytical by nature. In fact, my first A levels were all in art-based subjects.

In order to achieve the level I reached in science and maths, I had to discover strategies and techniques that worked well for me. That was the start of realising how important personal development and self-awareness are in education. I started tutoring and implementing this while at Durham and saw such great results that it became my profession.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I have multiple passions, such as sports and travelling. However, the one that complements my tutoring most, is psychometrics. I love to understand how people differ, particularly through their personalities and ability.

I actually took a summer training course at Cambridge University to study Psychometric assessments under Professor John Rust (a leading expert in the field) and have BPS and EFPA certificates for Occupational Test Use (COTU), Ability and Personality, Psychometrics and Quantitative Psychology. If I use these with my students, they often prefer something a little more fun, such as the 16 personalities test, which can still provide valuable insights into things such as whether they are likely to be organised or not, or whether they are likely to need more help managing anxiety.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P )?

For the following reasons in combination with each other, in no particular order:

    1. My record of achievement as a tutor (over 2,000 hours and 100 5* reviews on Tutorfair. Also voted as a top tutor on the platform in 2021)
    2. My academic record of achievement
    3. My experience of 10+ years as a tutor and academic coach
    4. My training in performance coaching and psychometric assessments
    5. My passion for what I do
    6. My understanding of technology and the most effective ways to deliver online lessons
    7. My vast resource library and knowing what resources to use for effective teaching
    8. My ability to organise, understand and empathise with my students, in addition to getting the best out of them
    9. My continuous personal development and desire to improve
    10. My relationship with my students and parents
