My approach to tutoring is built around one simple idea: students learn science best when they understand it, rather than simply memorize it.
I break difficult Biology concepts into clear, manageable steps and use diagrams, examples and targeted questions to help students build genuine understanding. Once the foundations are secure, we apply that knowledge to the types of questions students will encounter in assessment and exams.
A typical session will involve reviewing previous learning, identifying areas of difficulty, explicitly teaching or revising key concepts, working through questions together, and then giving the student opportunities to apply their understanding independently.
For senior Biology students, I also place a strong emphasis on assessment literacy. Students need to understand not only the Biology, but what QCAA questions and assessment criteria are actually asking them to demonstrate. I help students develop skills required to be successful in their assessments
