About Aaron
I teach my students to think like an artist. This is based on intensive study of the craft of art (drawing, color, paint handling) and an understanding of your place as an artist in an ever-changing world. This includes art history, self-examination, and useful techniques, developed over a lifetime of discovery, to answer the question "What do I paint?"
My name is Aaron Bowles, and I am an American contemporary painter. My impressionist and abstract landscapes are handled with an expressive touch, while my figurative work has a modernist flavor, and features dreams and mythology.
As far as my own painting, I work in a painterly style that features compositionally intensive abstraction with a colorist’s aesthetic. The work is composed in layers, of sometimes unexpected color, with a direct, expressionist stroke, based on emotionally charged scenes that contain light, drama and spirit.
I studied painting at East Carolina University, and hold an interdisciplinary bachelors degree from Virginia Commonwealth University where I studied communication arts, painting, and English. I continued my art education at the graduate level by studying painting at George Mason University. My illustrations have been presented in the pages of Time, Newsweek, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and many others. A former assistant professor of design, I taught art at George Mason University and Northern Virginia Community College. I am an enthusiastic teacher and actively participate in activities that allow me to demonstrate art and share my broad knowledge of painting and drawing. I exhibit nationally and am in numerous institutional and private collections.

Painting allows me to actualize my dreams and visions. I have these ideas all the time and will sketch them, or photograph a scene. I very much enjoy playing with color, and changing the impact of a scene with a slight twist in composition, emphasing some areas, using custom, personal color palettes, and experimenting with different views to find a new version. So really that's the important thing for me...to discover a new view of the world, to combine ideas, and try them out.
