Michael meets his students at their level and then raises the bar accordingly and incrementally. I've learned so much under his tutelage. He is extremely patient and so so kind hearted. And he has a GREAT sense of humor:)

I was a complete beginner two years ago when I started painting with Michael. Although he was not excited about my novice status on day one, he patiently demonstrated the basics and taught me to keep going back to these simple principles. He encourages with a great sense of humor and gives students enough time to work on our own while always being available for advice. While I tend to like traditional approaches I truly appreciate Michael’s belief that “there is no wrong way.”
My painting has come a long way in this short time period and has become a treasured part of my life. I have become a member of the Wellesley Society of Artists and have been participating in shows. I have even received Honorable Mention for a painting I exhibited at the Wellesley Library.

His demos are informative & compelling. He is able to evaluate what you know already, and what you need to learn, and guide you to the next level. He teaches with a gentle, persuasive guidance, and can always find something positive about your work. He’s able to ask a question i.e. where is the light coming from? The question pointedly resolves any problems. He’s a master of color, and with a little dab resolves the dilemma of the shade you’ve been searching for. His drawing skills enable me to adjust the subject to the right turn of the head. He’s versatile and crafty& adjusts to most mediums, materials & styles. He creates a special, supportive classroom environment.

Michael is a talented artist with excellent teaching skills. I have been painting and drawing with him for 3 years, both in group and private lessons. He is able to work to the level of each student with patience and with insight. He offers constructive criticism and helpful strategies which have helped me advance my skills in painting and in drawing. Additionally he is relaxed and personable. I recommend him whole heartedly!

I have been taking painting classes with Michael for about 9 years and I am still learning from him. In these classes at the Newart Center, I have also seen him guide many other students in their artistic endeavors. It is striking how he is able to meet individuals at their level, and always be encouraging.
While he takes art seriously, he does not take himself to seriously, and so creates a comfortable environment in which to explore and experiment with ones’ own style. He develops demonstrations based on what techniques students are trying to develop or are struggling with.
Michael is a remarkable resource about painting in general, techniques, theory, composition, color and most particularly art history.
In addition to all of that, it really is fun to learn from him.
