First, I see where the student currently is in relation to their skills/ knowledge on the topic. Then, I figure out what the student's interests are and use those to help teach the needed skills/knowledge to the student.
I have worked with students from freshmen in high school to seniors in college. I have worked with students from all kinds of backgrounds, cultures, and socioeconomic levels, and ability levels. I have worked with top honors students to students who have learning disabilities. I have experience teaching every type of student you could think of. Currently, as a college professor I'm working with several first generation college students.
First, look into the teacher's credentials to make sure they are legit.
Then, make sure the teacher has extensive background experience in teaching the skills/knowledge you are looking for, especially when it comes to improving your writing skills. It is very clear to me which of my college freshman students have had great writing teachers in the past, and which were not taught a single thing.

I do not have a standard pricing system because it makes more sense to adjust it based on what the student is looking for and how much time will need to be devoted to helping the student outside of just our hour face to face sessions
