About Merryn

Over 30 years experience, specializing in raising academic achievement for diverse students in English and Math, grades K-12 and Newcomer Adults who need to learn to read and do math in English. We will work together to gain skills, learn important concepts needed to make honest progress, and have a little fun along the way! My students improve their grades at school and earn better scores on tests. It is a lot of fun to learn when you are successful. I currently have students in or from Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America.

I love working with my students and bring out the best in their academic achievement. Our kids are a lot smarter than they are given credit for! My classes are happy and challenging, set up for the success of the student in each session. It is so much fun to see gains of over one-year in reading and math for my students!

My first teaching experience was with the Chicago Y.M.C.A, where I worked for over 10 years. I have been a public school teacher and curriculum coordinator for districts in the Twin Cities Metro Area for 30 years.

Minnesota Teacher License: Highly Qualified, K-6, Middle School Language Arts and Middle School Mathematics (current)

• TEFL/TOSOL Certification at the Masters Degree Level

• Certification in the Science of Reading, earned through the Minnesota Department of Education

• Math Trainer for K-8 Teachers

• Graduate of Augsburg University (K-6 Teaching Certificate)

• St. Mary's University (Masters Degree)

• University of Minnesota (Middle School Licensure in Language Arts and Mathematics 5-8), and Ed.S. Certification in Educational Policy and Administration, specializing in raising academic achievement and online learning.

About the lesson

First, we have a discussion of what the goals are for the tutoring sessions. I work with both children and adults. Next, we start out with a simple and accurate assessment, so that we understand the honest, current level of achievement of the student. Third, I design a learning plan for the student and we meet on a regular basis to complete the plan. Then we have fun working towards and achieving your goals!
