About Arly

Hi there! I'm Arly, an experienced professional writing coach offering flexible, tailored, and student-centered help. I can work with students on projects in all subjects and at all stages of the writing process, from brainstorming sessions and outlines to almost-finished products. To accommodate students' unique writing processes and busy schedules, I also offer asynchronous tutoring, in which I review the student's work and return detailed feedback and suggestions without the need for an in-person, real-time session.

With over four years of professional experience as a college Writing Center coach and academic specialist, I've worked with students with a wide range of interests on writing projects from research papers and Masters' theses to creative writing pieces and internship applications. My tutoring philosophy is defined by my enthusiasm for my students' work and my respect for their unique process: their strengths, where they hope to improve, what sparks their creativity, and what strategies work for them. Rather than a lecture, I think that tutoring should function as a conversation. I center the ideas and goals of the writers I tutor, and I aim to help students gather the tools and strategies they need to write effectively in their own voices.

I begin sessions by asking the student about the requirements or guidelines for the assignment, their progress so far, and what areas they're having trouble with or would like to focus on. Sessions end by establishing next steps to guide the student, whether we'll be meeting again or they'll be finishing their writing independently. For asynchronous sessions, I also like to discuss the student's timeline and ensure that we leave time before any submission deadlines for the student to revise and incorporate feedback into their work.

As an Academic Specialist at Kean University, I've worked with an incredibly diverse student body. In addition to both undergraduate and graduate students from a range of backgrounds and majors, I have significant experience working with students who speak English as a second language and older or "non-traditional" students who may be returning to school after a gap.
