About Kia
I have just graduated from the University of British Columbia with a double major in Political Science and Human Geography. I have maintained a B+ average throughout my entire educational career.
I want to provide my knowledge as a resource for other students to learn from my experiences. I have five years of experience working with children and teaching them new skills through activities.
I was also an Au Pair in Spain where I taught two young children english through interactive creative games as well as teaching them conversational english by just talking with them and having them speak about their interests and hobbies.
During my study abroad year in Amsterdam I was an orientation leader for new exchange students, where I gained experience in cross-cultural communication.
In my final year of undergrad I was an editor for the Trail Six journal where I worked with a student on editing their paper and expanding on their ideas. ((concealed information)

I am very eager to start helping people learn in any way I can, not only do I want to help people gain knowledge and academic skills, but I hope to be a positive influence in one's day as well.
Many of the issues our society faces today is due to solutions that have not been thought out fullt and therefore lead to unwanted and unforseen consequences, the beauty of education and teaching is that with the spread of knowledge within society we can mitigate the ineffective and lazy processes of thinking. I hope to teach a mindset of understanding rather than fact based memorization. Much of learning comes from understanding the study skills that allow one to understand the material best. I hope to aid students in understanding the best study practices for them.
My educational background is in Political Science and Human Geography specifically. In political science I specialize in political theory but have taken classes in all aspects of the subject. Human geography is very interdisciplinary and I have really enjoyed undergoing this major. Both of these majors have specialized knowledge while also giving foundational understandings as to how society works, which is why I chose to double major in them.
I began working at a business that provides activities for childrens birthday parties, the activities varied each party which meant I had to learn all the different crafts as well as know how to teach them to young children.
I worked with the parents on setting up and facilitating the birthday party from start to finish.
I also Au Paired in Spain for two months, where I lived with a Spanish family and became part of their family. I played soccer and taught the six year old boy english through soccer terms since that was his favorite activity to do everyday. I had conversations with the eight-year old daughter in english about everything and anything she wanted to talk about. Both children were able to learn through the activities that they enjoyed.
During my year studying abroad I spoke with people from all around the world and learned how to communicate with non-fluent english speakers. It was a great chance to practice using language that was easily understandable for non-english speakers as well as learning what words and phrases were difficult to understand coming from a non-english background. In my second semester abroad I volunteered to be an orientation coach. In this role I taught the exchange students about Amsterdam and created fun and inclusive events for the students to enjoy their time abroad.

I begin by getting to know the student as a person and understand the way they learn. Its more of a collabroation between how the student wants to work and then how I fit my guidance around that. Forcing a standardized method is the opposite of my approach, I am very attentive to how the student is learning and absorbing the material.
