About Maggie

I am a lifelong writer and English teacher who LOVES the process! I excel at meeting students where they are with their writing and connecting personally and professionally for success.

I enjoy collaborating with students to achieve their writing goals.

I have a BA and MA in English. I have a M.Ed and teacher certification. I taught college and high school English in Philadelphia and seventh grade here in Syracuse. I am no longer teaching full time but have a part time job at a local college where I work with high school and college students on their essays for college and graduate school as well as applications for internships, cover letters, and resumes. I even assisted my boss with writing a grant last year! I do a lot of editing of letters, newsletters, and other office communications. I ran an adult creative writing workshop for three years and work on my own creative writing every day. I write in my journal every day and write poetry, short stories, and essays. I am a published writer with several credits to my name. I have an essay and a short story coming out in the fall. I currently have 18 pieces out for publication (although they have not been accepted (YET!)!). I love and am dedicated to my craft as a writer and I love helping people with their writing.

About the lesson

I would first have conversation so I can get a sense of student's wishes and struggles. I would have a conversation to get a sense of the student's personality and learning style. Then, we would focus on a specific goal or project, break it down into small steps, and then start knocking out each step. If student needed modeling, I would do this and then ask the student to pick up where I left off. I would gauge the student's independence level on a case-by-case basis, and determine what level of support is needed based on the individual. I would give the student tasks to accomplish when we are apart so that the student could develop craft and I could see growth as well as issues or struggles and consider how to address them.
