About Steven

I have been teaching for just about ten years in the middle and high school settings. I have my undergraduate degree in secondary education/social studies, and a masters degree in special education. I have taught English, reading, writing, and a wide range of history courses. I have prepared students for MCAS exams and hold a 100% passing rate on the 10th grade ELA MCAS. I work in both the general ed. and special ed. settings.

Seeing students succeed that didn't know they could is one of the greatest aspects of my job. I love getting to know my students, their interests, what their goals are, etc. and work with them to accomplish those goals in new and fun ways.

I knew I wanted to be a teacher when I did a project my junior year of high school where I worked with middle school students. From there I followed a path through college that ultimately brought me to my first job in Boston.

I hold a bachelors degree in Secondary Education and social studies (history, geography, psychology, economics, etc.) and a Masters in Special Education.

I hold my teaching license in Secondary Education History as well as my teaching license in Special Education.

I worked for 6 years at a therapeutic day school in Boston. In this setting I taught numerous classes consisting of students with learning and behavioral challenges.

For the past two years, I have been teaching in a public High School on the North Shore. I maintain a special education caseload where I teach study skills, executive functioning support, and therapeutic supports throughout the day, as well as teaching a small group U.S. History course. I also teach a general education course to Freshman on World Cultures.

Typically, I try to get to know a student before engaging in academics. I have some brief surveys and questionnaires I like to give students (depending on age and level of the student). From there we do some diagnostic assessment, conversations about school (what is hard, what do you like, etc.), and brief mini assignments so that I can get a baseline for where the student is at. Once that baseline is established, I will customize a program to move forward, based on established level of the student, goals for the tutoring sessions, etc.

I have worked with a wide range of students from 7th to 12 grade. The students I have worked with have ranged from high functioning, general education students taking honors and AP courses, to students with significant developmental delays, learning dissabilities, and behavioral issues.

Ultimately, to be successful, a student has to have the drive and internal motivation to put in the work. I can provide all of the tools and practice opportunities to help a student reach their goals, but if the student is unwilling to put in the work, the system doesn't work. Students will get out what they put in at an exponential rate.

The freshman students I work with this year had some very intensive deficits, and I am very proud of the success they have found this year and the quality of work they are now producing.
