About Kuma
I don’t believe in the term “I am not a math person.” I truly believe that everyone has the intrinsic capacity to think analytically and solve difficult problems. What students who say this are lacking isn’t talent, but rather confidence in their own ability. My approach as a tutor focuses on guiding students through problems by giving them little nudges and hints along the way to help them ultimately find solutions on their own. Rather than forcing students to memorize bland formulas and theorems, I seek to help them understand why the formula or theorem is important, how it is derived, and how it can be used to help them solve the problems they will encounter in class.
Though my services primarily deal with math Tutoring (Basic Arithmetic - Calculus II). I am also available to help assist students with their college applications and essays(brainstorming, editing, interview prep). I personally know what it takes to awe the nation's top Universities and cement yourself in the top of their applicant pools. I was able to get into my top choice school(Harvard) during one of its most selective admissions cycles in history(4.59% acceptance rate). I got in not because of sheer luck, but because I tactfully curated my application to portray a holistic and authentic version of myself while still highlighting all of my unique talents and skills.
I simply love seeing concepts finally click in students’ minds and helping them achieve a level of confidence in their own academic/mathematical ability that they have never experienced before. Throughout my own personal academic journey, I have at various times felt ostracized, isolated, and alone and I know many students have the same struggles in the classroom. Being one of the only black kids in my advanced STEM classes, I constantly felt self-doubt. However, through perseverance, I was able to find confidence in my ability and become an extremely successful student. My goal now with tutoring is to help other students feeling self-doubt break out of this barrier and gain confidence in themselves and their abilities. Naturally, good results will follow!
I became a volunteer Math Tutor at my high school when I was a sophomore. By the time I was a Senior, I was not only the head of my school’s Math Tutoring Program which provides free tutoring to students seeking help, but I was also a Chinese Tutor for underclassmen and a computer science tutor.
I attended the Thacher School in Ojai, CA - an elite, private boarding-highschool. I graduated Cum Laude with a 4.7 weighted GPA. While at Thacher, I challenged myself by taking the most rigorous courses available to me(Advanced Computer Science, Advanced Data Structures & Algorithms, Calculus II Honors, and Honors Multivariable Calculus, Chinese I - Adv Chinese ).
Next fall, I will continue my academic journey in Cambridge Massachusetts as I attend Harvard University. I’m currently planning on concentrating in Mechanical Engineering.

Firstly, I will try to work through some challenging problems with them to gain a sense of what concepts they are struggling to understand. Once I know what needs to be worked on, we will focus intensively on problems with similar content so that the student can gain mastery of the material/skill. If a student is stuck, I like to ask them to walk me through their thought process and the work that they have put into the problem so far so that we can acknowledge what has been done well and figure out how to continue with the problem from where they got stuck.
So far, I have only worked with Highschool students. However, I am completely open to tutoring students in middle school or even elementary school as long as they are willing and ready to learn and improve!
