About Jason
My varied musical journey has given me the skills to meet my students where they are and help them to grow in ability, confidence and musicianship.
I grew up in a musical family where just about everyone on my Dad's side plays multiple instruments. My first memories are of sitting in my uncle Tom's basement watching the folks play. We still get together every once in awhile to play bluegrass, old-style music, and folk. I started playing the guitar at the age of eight, the piano somewhere around that time, and picked up the mandolin and banjo. In fifth grade, I started playing violin (and fiddle music with my family), and continued in both classical and contemporary instruction throughout middle school and high school. I had the pleasure of serving as concertmaster for the CHS senior orchestra, as well as singing in the select choirs and jazz choirs, playing piano/keyboards in the stage band and pep band, and taking private violin instruction. I also began writing music in high school. Over the years, I've picked up a number of other instruments and am always learning something new.
When I graduated from CHS in 1996 and headed off to Northwest Christian University, I decided to major in music ministry—essentially a music performance degree with a Christian emphasis. My primary instrument was voice, and I decided to study guitar more seriously as my secondary instrument. I've been classically trained as a tenor.
In 1998, I was honored to be one of the singer/songwriters featured on the College Life Compilation, produced by Paul Wright along with other artists from Northwest Christian University, including Ryan Stevenson, Shawn McDonald & Keegan Smith. I also toured with several groups including Pilgrimage, a group of eight that played just about every weekend during 1998-1999, including a 12 concert tour through California.
In 2006 I became the fiddle player for Wanigan (a progressive bluegrass/folk band). We released Brand New Day in 2008, Firefly in 2013, and we're working on the seeds of our next album.
I'm here to help students from beginner to advanced. I'm always excited to help a student grow in their skills and in their love for music and the arts. I do my best to help my students learn at their own pace, with just enough challenge to keep it interesting and fun but not overwhelming.
I really enjoy helping my students to find their own "eukairos," a Greek word that means roughly "the best opportunity." For me, that means helping them to find their passion so that they will keep on learning and growing the rest of their life.
I've been teaching music privately off and on for years, and have taught workshops at multiple bluegrass festivals. As an art director I've done a lot of training and teaching of artists and other employees that I've worked with. My first formal teaching position was for Lewis-Clark State College, where I was adjunct faculty between June 2012 and August 2018. At LCSC, I taught Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator along with social media marketing.
I’ve been playing the guitar for 37 years, the violin for 35, and a number of other instruments for most of my life. I've studied classically and had both formal and informal private instruction in multiple instruments across a wide range of musical genres and styles. I am also a classically trained vocalist (a high tenor).
I studied music ministry at Bushnell University in Eugene, Oregon; music performance with a ministry emphasis that gave me all kinds of opportunities to learn composition, arranging, theory, history, and technique. My primary instrument was voice and my secondary instrument was guitar.

In your first lesson, we'll talk about your goals and previous musical experiences (if any) and agree on a weekly time slot that works for everybody. If you don't presently have an instrument, I will recommend a package that fits your budget and gives you the best bang for your buck. You might be surprised how inexpensive it is to get started!
All lessons are conducted as 30, 45 or 60 minute sessions, taught weekly (or twice a week if you prefer). You choose the session length that works for you! Advanced students are encouraged to schedule 60 minute sessions so we can get as much accomplished as possible, but I never require you to do so. I do my best to be available to my students and you can text me with questions anytime. If I don't have time to answer them immediately we will do so at the next lesson.
My students have ranged from curious kids to seniors who have always wanted to learn to play. I've worked with employees of local businesses looking to improve their skills, artists wanting to play with digital media, and special needs students looking for fun and a challenge. My wife Lindsay is a developmental elementary teacher and we collaborate when there are special needs involved.
Before selecting a teacher, look for one who has goals similar to your own. Are you looking for someone strict that will hold you accountable to practice sessions, or are you looking for someone that will let you learn at your own pace, or a little of both? What you do most want to learn? What are you most passionate about? The best teachers are those that recognize your passion and are passionate themselves in seeing you succeed... in ways that support your own goals and priorities.
My philosophy is help you to learn and grow at your pace, while challenging you with big and small goals to give you focus. While there is definitely discipline involved in learning an instrument, I believe music (and all the arts) should be a "want to" rather than a "have to." That being said, if you have a particular goal that you want to shoot for in a specific timeframe, I can help you get there!
I recently taught the fiddle workshop at the Valley Bluegrass Festival. I had some amazing students who asked really good questions, from a couple of young ladies who were just starting out to a couple of seasoned fiddle players. We went 30 minutes over our normal time because the interest was so great.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Start by dreaming big! Don't be afraid to spend some time thinking about what you are passionate about. The best and brightest musicians and artists are those that found a passion and followed it wherever it lead. Technical ability is important, but before you can grow in your abilities you'll want to do some creative goal-setting. What are you most passionate about? What really, really floats your boat? Why do you want to learn? What do you want to learn? And finally, what do you want to do when you get there?

Details
Lessons start at $45 for a 30 minute lesson, $55 for a 45 minute lesson, or $65 for an hour. You’re welcome to pay by the lesson, or you can save quite a bit if you prepay for tuition. I always reward my students for their commitment. I also proudly have discounts for service personnel and their families! Prepaid tuition is a flat fee that cannot be pro-rated if a student misses a lesson. Students make up all missed lessons on the fifth lesson day of the month as it occurs. Students are not charged extra for months with five lesson days.
During the months of December, July and August lessons will be pro-rated as necessary for vacations for the end of the year / summer holidays. If a student needs to take a break from lessons, I ask as a courtesy a one week notice before the start of the new month.
In the event of a health or family emergency, it is always my preference to schedule a make up lesson or pro-rating the monthly payment. All make up lessons or pro-rated payments are solely at my discretion. Refunds will not be given on missed lessons without at least 24 hours notice.
If I need to cancel a lesson that has already been paid for, credit in the form of a make up lesson or pro-rated payment will be made.
