About Amy
I understand what it means to struggle in school. Having learning disabilities myself, I know that the most common teaching techniques don't work for everyone. Every person deserves to learn in a way that makes sense to them. The struggle is applying these alternate methods in everyday settings, such as work and school. Without my own tutors and teachers I would not have come to love learning; as I hope my students do.
I have several years of tutoring experience through friends and family. As well as volunteering in high school and college. I have recently completed my associate degree and I look forward to helping students and parents strive toward their academic goals.
Although I have never taught in a classroom, professionally, my experience transcends multiple subjects and age groups. I have volunteered with the National Parks Service, Friends of Patterson Park, Baltimore City Department of Parks and Recreation and numerous other entities; participating in living history, afterschool, tour guide, educational outreach, and recreation programs.
I have an associate degree in History, but I have always strived for a well rounded education. I have experience in English, Social Sciences, Introductory Math and Sciences. However, my most valuable experience is that of a student. I learned from gifted tutors and teachers in my own life, the tips, tricks, and techniques that can not only make learning accessible but enjoyable for students of all ages.

During a first session I discuss the student's goals, issues, current academic curriculum, and problem areas with students and parents (as appropriate). These are the building blocks of a productive tutoring program. I also run through some placement and knowledge excercises with my students. I know that the average classroom setting can easily leave gaps in a student's knowledge of a subject and often these gaps do not become obvious until they become a problem weeks, months, or even years later.
I have had the privilege to work with students with and without learning disabilities and across age groups and personal backgrounds. Most of my students with learning difficulties deal with Dyslexia, ADD, and ADHD. However, it is important to remember that every person can benefit from one on one tutoring.
While I work in a variety of subjects, History is my passion. The best advice I could give is that, although most classes focus on dates, names, and events; what makes History is the how and the why. These two points are the reason students are made to memorize the who, what, and when.
When looking for a history tutor make sure that that they focus on the big picture as well as the details. History is not only what happened yesterday, it is how yesterday affects today and tomorrow.
