About Rachel
I have several years of tutoring and teaching experience. I am also more concerned with students' understanding of material than rote memorization. Mathematics, engineering and even writing are logical and pattern-oriented; understanding material fully is far more fulfilling and useful.
I enjoy helping students understand new material and also acquire new skills for learning. Learning mathematics, science, engineering and writing add to skillsets that students utlize for the rest of their lives, and I enjoy being part of that process.
I have a BS in Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Mathematics from Boston University, where I was salutatorian of my class. I am currently finishing a Masters in International Public Policy and Diplomacy on a scholarship, and will begin at Harvard for a PhD in Systems, Synthetic and Quantitative Biology. I tutored primarily General Chemistry in BU's athletic department for 2.5 years. My broad background qualifies me for science and math tutoring, but I can also aid in communication and writing (e.g. science reports or presentations, or any kind of research paper).

I ask for a bit of the student's background regarding the subject (e.g. how far the student is in a subject, their comfort level, etc.) and then we begin with any specific questions the student may have about homework or an upcoming assessment. If the student has no questions, I will either press forward into future material, or re-cover material the student may still be uncomfortable with.
