First to any relationship is trust. To me, trust can begin with establishing a basis of what we’re here to do. Without knowing where a student is in their academic competencies, its difficult to build momentum in their learning. When I teach math its about building a mathematical foundation for understanding the world. Technology has become complex and integrated and empowered people need conceptual models (read: complex systems theory) in order to make sense of the world, let alone improve (or create) a product or a company. True mathematics is developed for a purpose. Senseless math in hopes of getting students to Calculus only helps young folks find disdain for complex modes of understanding. Learning math is all about building confidence across the map of mathematical concepts, piece by piece, while continually integrating the bigger picture.
