About Dominique
Sweaty palms, the scent of freshly sharpened pencils, and the feeling of excitement in the air. Mrs. Janeway has been on stage, so to speak, educating students for seven years. She has spent these blessed years; driving to school, driving from school, attending PTA meetings, sponsoring two successful clubs, coordinating 5K runs, thinking about her students and dreaming of innovative ways to inspire young minds. Her classrooms and school every year becomes a close-knit community, connected by the shared belief that they will improve education together. She is strongly aware of her student progress, as well as the best methods of teaching and reaching her students through data-driven instruction. She is always trying to improve her teaching methods in the classroom whether it is attending professional development or using a very valuable resource she has at her school, her third grade team. Over the past few years, she has managed to obtain over 362 hours of professional development. She has presented over technology incorporation in Tampa, Dallas, Houston, and Austin. Goal setting is a personal strength she truly incorporates into not only her classroom, but her daily life. Her core values tie into the vision of her campus in which every students deserves a driven and passionate educator who can challenge every student to achieve at their highest level. Ever since she started teaching at her previous campus, she has been passionate in her commitment to three things: maximizing student learning, instilling a sense of self-worth among her students and technology incorporation.

I truly enjoy creating relationships with my students and building a relationship. A lesson that truly defines her as a teacher isn’t on our pacing math guide or taught in a unit. This lesson is taught throughout the course of the year. Mrs. Janeway strongly believes in practicing cultural awareness. She wants her students to feel a sense of belonging in the classroom and to take pride in oneself. At the beginning of the year, in order for her students to adapt to new environment of our classroom and to feel safe and comfortable, she creates an atmosphere of inclusivity. She chooses texts that are relevant to and explore cultural differences, and communicate with students and parents about needs and high expectations. Practicing cultural awareness and sensitivity as a teacher requires a little more consideration, but we owe it to our profession, our students, and the surrounding community to put in the work. And by doing so, you will allow all of your students to have an equitable experience in your class. She ties culturally relevant read-alouds into her lessons throughout the year. One book that spoke to her students is Henry’s Freedom Box: A True Story from the Underground Railroad by Ellen Levine. This story has stunning illustrations which tells the historical account of Henry, a runaway slave who mailed himself 350 miles in a box to freedom from Richmond, VA, to Philadelphia, PA. This simple text delivers a heartbreaking and inspiring story of Henry Brown, a real-life hero who never knew his age or birthday, and his escape from slavery.
I started teaching in San Antonio Independent School District at Crockett Academy. I taught four years in 4th grade, two years in 5th grade and I am currently teaching 3rd Grade.

When working with a new student, I will ask them a series of questions to get to know them personally. I would like to see their interest and create lessons to incorporate this into my digital lessons. I will see where the student is academically. Then I will create engaging lessons that tie science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
I have taught over 300 students since first entering the classroom. From Gifted and Talented, Special Education, Dyslexic to students with other learning disabilities. I strive to meet the needs of all my learners.
I would ask the teacher what is their "why?" Why do you teach?
Teaching empathy in the classroom transforms a community. The benefits of empathy in my classroom includes building positive classroom culture, strengthening our community, and preparing my students to be leaders in their own communities. Given that the definition of empathy involves understanding another's feelings without having experience, empathy sets students up to deepen relationships with their current classmates and people that they know outside of school. In our increasingly globalized world, her student come from different cultures and different socioeconomic backgrounds, therefor it is necessary to develop empathy skills. I provided an example daily of showing students how we can display acts of kindness and empathy. I know that her students watch her and learn from her example. They learn from her character and behaviors as much as they do from my instruction. I can act like a consistent example of empathy, and exude a caring, compassionate, understanding attitude.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What motivates you? What challenges have you experienced in the classroom? What are your interest?
