About Joshua
Background:
During a conversation with my college calculus professor, I asked for his advice on pursing a career in academia. His response was that I have a "temperament that lends well to teaching."
I worked as a tutor at ACC for a short time while I was between jobs, and I received very positive and encouraging feedback from students and coworkers. On my first day, 3 students asked when I would be working again so they could come into the tutoring lab on those specific days. Their praises were centered around the way I explained things and my interpersonal skills.
I've been told numerous times by friends and aquaintences that I would make a great teacher. I've been described as comical, patient, gentle, and just plain fun to work with.
I've been working in engineering for the past 5 years, and while it is a secure and challenging industry to be in, my heart has always pulled me toward helping people, especially students. I have a natural talent for it considering my own personal struggles, and it's the one thing I've always been able to do without it feeling like a job. It's hard to describe the sense of reward when I get a text message from a parent saying something like "We're celebrating right now because our daughter got an A on her final! Thank you so much!" That's a feeling I have not been able to reproduce in any of my jobs in the industry.
Qualifications:
I have been working in the IT industry for over 10 years, and I've been in the engineering sector for the last 5. I'm currently working as a software test engineer.
I have a bachelor's degree in computer science with a minor in mathematics.
I tutored math at Austin Community College in September 2018 while I was between jobs. Granted this was a short time, I developed great relationships with my peers and students. They are happy to have me back any time.
I spent another 3 months tutoring math to various students between October 2019 and December 2019 through Grade Potential Tutoring. During this time I traveled to students' homes and conducted online sessions over skype. I managed all this while working full time and completing my degree.

I started by applying for a tutoring job with Austin Community College while I was between jobs. I also found that I enjoyed helping my classmates while I was taking difficult math courses.
I have worked in the IT industry for 10 years and I have a bachelor's degree in computer science with a minor in mathematics. I also have real tutoring experience at both a school and freelancing.

I like to open up by having casual conversation. I'll typically ask about their hobbies and interests, then move into discussing how things are going with school and what they enjoy or dislike about it. They will usually bring up the problem areas on their own after some ice-breaking, then it's fairly easy to determine what to address.
I have helped students as young as 6th grade taking intermediate algebra, students with attention problems, and struggling high school students taking algebra 1 and algebra 2.
I would say to shop around and not settle for just anyone. There are countless personalities out there, and often times success comes from finding the teacher that connects well with the student. Pay attention to how people market themselves - do they come off as someone that has an appealing personality and would be fun to work with, or someone with exceptional technical skills but limited interpersonal skills? Credentials and titles aren't everything.
I spent several weeks tutoring a 6th grader who had a difficult time sitting still for more than a few minutes at a time. She would constantly check her watch while we worked through her practice problems, and I could see she was always in a hurry to get through them. She was clearly very bright, but I could see her attention problems were at the root of her struggle. I just sat with her and let her do her thing, and over time she started asking for help and becoming more interested in the material. Her grades improved by a whole letter grade and she passed her final with an A. Her parents were so excited and went out of their way to contact me and thank me for my time. This was a highly rewarding experience.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Is the core of my struggle with my ability or with the relationship with my teacher?
Are there any challenges in my personal life that may be influencing my performance in school?
What are my goals? Do I want to just pass or do I want to excel and prepare myself for the next level?
Is there anything about a particular course that I find uniquely interesting?
