About Sandy

Every child deserves a fantastic math education. I teach to make this a reality. Here are a few key things I believe on this topic:

Math should be fascinating and fun - I strive to teach in a way which reflects this. Math is one of my favorite things, and it saddens me how widely hated the whole subject is. When I work with students, I aim to help them learn to see math differently and find enjoyment and satisfaction in the work they do.

Math is a creative process, which goes deeper than memorizing facts - The real world does not present you with equations followed by four answer choices. Real-world math is about applying mathematical principles in new situations and in new ways; it's about problem-solving. As Neil deGrasse Tyson once said, "Knowing how to think, empowers you far beyond others who know only what to think." When we teach only facts, our students forget these facts in time and have little to take into their adult lives. When we teach facts along with skills such as perseverance, problem-solving, and questioning, our students grow into leaders and innovators.

Everyone can be a mathematician - Many people believe that they are just not meant to be any good at math. I don't believe this is true about anyone. Galileo called math the language of the universe. If we all speak at least one language already, why can't we also expect to learn the language of the universe in which we are living? I strongly believe that, with the right support, math can make sense to anyone.

Ms. Saxon's Qualifications:

Teaching skills: I have a Master of Arts in Teaching with a focus on math for grades 4-8. As part of my education courses, I worked with hundreds of students, primarily providing one-on-one support either during class time, as part of math intervention, or after school. My specialty is helping students who need something beyond what traditional classroom instruction is able to provide.

Math skills: When I was in high school, I got a 780 on the math portion of the SAT, and in college, I recieved the only perfect score on my school's quantitative reasoning assessment. I also took several advanced math courses beyond the standard requirements for a teacher, so I understand how to build foundational math knowledge appropriately in order to support a later journey into advanced mathematics.

I took to math from a young age, so I was always helping my friends and classmates get a better understanding of math topics they were struggling with. Early in my time at college, I was helping a friend study for her college algrebra course, which she felt doomed to fail. I was able to help her understand a topic she had apparently struggled with for years. She told me how several different teachers had never been able to help her and how she wished that any one of them had ever explained math the way that I did. I was so moved that I started education courses that next semester, and I fell completely in love with teaching.

I have a Master of Arts in Teaching as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts and Interdisciplinary Studies (what some schools call their degree for teaching). Both of these degrees required many hours of working directly with students. Because of this, I have worked one on one with hundreds of students. I have also taken several advanced math courses beyond what is standard for education degrees.

I would start by identifying goals and challenges with the student's parent or guardian. Then, I would look at the student's current work and ask the student questions about their thoughts in order to assess their individual needs as well as their strengths. I believe in individualized, whole child support, so everything I would do would be based on what best suits that student.

I have worked primarily with students from ages 3 to 14. I have worked with all sorts of students from students who love math and regularly excel at it to students who have essentially had their teachers give up on them entirely and feel like giving up on themselves. I have also worked with students with various mild to moderate disabilities.

Look for someone who genuinely cares about you and your success. All the qualifications and experience in the world won't mean a thing if the teacher doesn't care.
