* Raised AP Physics C Mechanics pass rate from 26% to 89%
* Raised AP Calculus AB exam pass rate from 24% to 67%
* Raised AP Calculus BC exam pass rate from 36% to 90%

The joy of helping a student reach their academic joys is unparalleled. I learned this when mentoring newly hired actuaries fell under my professional responsibilities. Even more than my actual consulting work with my clients, I came to really love seeing the career progression of "my" fresh analysts as they grew into senior members of our firm and career.
Immediately after college, I taught briefly before moving on to a long career as a consulting actuary. Eventually, I became extensively engaged in the work of the Society of Actuaries in providing both basic education to new actuarial professionals seeking their initial certification and continuing professional education to experienced actuaries. This experience convinced me to return to teaching, and I am currently (Aug. 2020) starting my sixth year in the classroom.
My undergraduate degree was in physics and mathematics, and I got a Master of Science in mathematical and theoretical physics (my research was in computational physics). I had a 20-year career as a consulting actuary, where my work involved programming quantitative models for large pension plans. This gives me an uncommon blend of classroom training and work experience related directly to the subjects I teach.

First thing is evaluation of a student's current strengths and areas for improvement. This avoids working on material the student already knows well or on material that is beyond the student's grasp at the present time.
I have worked with a broad range of students but am most successful with higher-level courses (AP Calculus, AP Physics, AP Computer Science, AICE Mathematics). I have also enjoyed working with students in honors-level courses feeding into those AP courses, such as pre-calculus and programming.
Make sure that your teacher knows their stuff. It is often said that it doesn't matter what a teacher knows if they can't explain it, and that's true. However, that is not the most common problem in technical fields at the high school and community college level. In those cases, it is much more likely that the teacher or professor simply doesn't have a good grasp of the material themselves. Physics teachers are sometimes chemistry or biology teachers drafted to teach physics part time. Calculus teachers often just barely passed calculus themselves in college. Computer science teachers are almost never trained in programming and are sometimes literally one lesson ahead of their students. Buyer beware!
Time to brag on my kids a little bit. College Board results are out for 2020 ... my students did outstanding work under very challenging circumstances. We had to do the entire 4th quarter reviews remotely and got their best results ever -- highest pass rates AND highest average scores EVER seen at my school on four AP courses that are probably the most challenging in the entire curriculum (Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Physics C, Computer Science A). This was despite being unable to take even a single practice exam (no way to ensure question security) and working with completely asynchronous instruction (was not allowed to require students to attend at a specified time).
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should have evaluated themselves and understand what they need from a teacher. Do they need to understand the subject from the very foundations? Do they need a review of some more complicated topics? Are they looking for some tips and tricks to be faster or more efficient? That will allow the teacher to individualize instruction.
