About William

My service stands out because of it's interdisciplinary nature. I graduated college with a B.S. in Mathematics, a certificate to teach Secondary Mathematics in PA as well as minoring in English. I also spent 3 years as a practicing Writing Tutor for my college's writing center. While being trained to teach math and tutoring college students on how to improve their writing, I learned how the skills that go with mathematics and the skills that go with learning english are related. Because of these experiences I am able to help student who may struggle with math see math concepts from a new perspective.

I love teaching and tutoring because of the opportunity it gives me to empower students. I think of myself not as teaching content but instead providing opportunities for students to learn for themselves. I also enjoy helping students make connections and realize that they have that within them. I think the education system as it stands now is failing a lot of students because it focuses on memorization and base understanding in the service of passing standardized tests. But I believe that education can be improved by shifting the focus to a deeper level of understanding where students can see how what they are learning will help them throughout their lives.

I first became interested in teaching in high school when I would help my friends who were stuggling with calculus in private tutoring sessions. It was through these sessions that I realized how much I enjoyed teaching and the power it had to build people's confidence. But within school I could see how easily a teacher, but especially math teachers, could destroy a students cocnfidence by not making the content accessible. So I felt like I could make a difference within the world of teaching, not only in the lives of students but hopefully also for other math teachers.

I went to Muhlenberg College, where I graduated with a major in Mathematics and a Minor in English. I also graduated from their education program. Within the program, I was working within a real classroom once a week every week for every semester and my last semester was spent in student teaching four periods of 7th grade algrba. This provided me with a lot of hands on experience with forging student relationships, working with teachers and writing & implimenting lesson plans. Throughout college I also worked as a writing tutor for the school's writing program where I would meet with students either for one-time sessions or with weekly meetings where we would review their writing and through directed conversation find ways for students to improve their writing skills. I also have done private math tutoring sessions for freinds and family for many years now.

The first thing I like is to get to know the student some. I like to talk with them about what they like to do both within and outside of school, establishing a relationship with the student is key. I think it is really important to start with a common understanding of the student's background knowledge in the subject so that we can build from what they already know. I also like to find out what they feel they need the most help with, areas they want to improve on so that I can ensure that the following meetings are student focused.

I have worked with all kinds of students. I have a lot of experience with student who have learning or behavioral disabilities. While student teaching, two of the classes I took over were inclusion settings with a special education co-teacher. In these classes about 50% of the students had either a learning or behavorial disability, some whose math skills were as low as a 2nd grade level. I also have a fair amount of experience working with ESL students, there was one semester where I followed and aided an ESL middle school teacher once a week. And as a writing tutor I have been certified to tutor ESL students from completing a series of seminars on how to teach ESL students.
