About Heidi

I started teaching during my graduation, as a professor assistent on Algorithms.

Later, during my masters, I interned as a professor, also in a math related subject, and worked with teenagers around 18 years old at college entry level.

I am a graduated Civil Engineer and during my masters I interned as a professor on math related subjects.

The process starts by email (heidimpa @ icloud . com) or texting via this website

1. I usually ask:

- What are the main struggles

- What grade is the student

- What topics does the student need help with

2. The next step is to book a free online meeting. There I talk to the parent and/or student in order to deeply understand what the student is going through. During the meeting I measure out the struggles and mostly hear - this time is to hear the students' and the parents' concerns.

3. Once the student is sure he/she wants to work with me we set the goals and book the first classes. I usually plan a few classes to gradually approach the main struggles and adapt the classes according to feedback.

MIDDLE SCHOOL/HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

6th and 7th year students - I prepare Interactive lessons, always paying attention if the student understand the explanations. When working with younger students I am extra careful to follow the student pace and make him/her feel comfortable and confident about math.

Pre-algebra and Algebra 1 students - At this point I usually reinforce the concepts in order to build a good foundation for what comes next. I like to follow the school curriculum and use part of the students' text book to guide the approach.

Also, these students often need help to  recognize patterns and understand variables. I pay very close attention on what teaching strategy works the best whether it is exemples, drawings, metaphors/analogies or memorization.

Geometry students - I like to help my student's intuition improve so they can easily recognize shapes and symmetry. This makes them greatly improve their problem-solving habilities and their grades.

Also, I like to strengthen the basics, such as transformations, right triangles trigonometry and isoceles triangles so the student can grow easier when studying other topics.

Honors Geometry students - Besides regular geometry's topics, here I work to deepen conceptual understanding, challenge the student, make demonstrations and relate concepts of diferent topics, which is very helpful for problem solving. I also provide some challenge excercises and encourage the students to do their best in math.

Algebra 2 students - Here I teach my students not only how to apply formulas and concepts, but also make them deeply understand functions and proportions - two key concepts in Algebra 2. I also work to fill in any gaps and bring many kinds of excercises not only to improve the students' comprehension, but also to help him/her prepare for a test.

Trigonometry students - Also a very important topic and might seem tricky sometimes, but not for my students as I break down and explain this topic until they understand everything. I help my trigonometry strudents use equations and make demonstrations, fill in any gaps they hava, and prepare for tests - Aways following the student pace to help to improve my students' skills and confidence.

Pre-calculus students -  Since those students often intend to take Calculus I teach pre-calculus' topics aiming a good set of skills for the next subject.

When I took AP Calculus classes, I experienced how important functions, algebrical manipulations and trigonometry are for calculus so I give extra attention to reinforce those topics besides all the other taught in Pre-calculus.

TEST PREP

SAT math

SAT may not have extremelly hard math problems, but with the clock ticking some anxieties may take over and overwhelm the students' thought process.

I work strategies to help my students build confidence and beat the clock.

I also reinforce algebra manipulation skills  and teach some 4 operations tricks - might seem like it's back to the basics, but it makes the students solve problems faster.

To add up I teach how to use symmetry and trigonometry to tackle the geometry problems by a easier and faster approach. And many more skills to solve all kinds of SAT problems.
