About Yitzhak
I have a mathematics Ph.D, and over a year of online tutoring experience, with generally high reviews.
I signed up for a different tutoring site in order to make some additional money.
I have a very strong mathematical background, culminating in a Ph.D in abstract algebra/algebraic geometry. I also have spent over a year tutoring online.

If the student (or parent, depending on the situation) is interested, I would first write up a list of practice questions for the topic, for the student to answer as many as he/she can, and thereby give me a good idea of which areas he/she needs help with. After that, or if the student/parent wants to go straight to tutoring, I would give the student the option of either going over questions from class (where permitted by the class), or making up questions for the student, or simply going over the topics. If it turns out that the student's primary issues are in an area that I cannot help that much with (e.g. reading word problems), I would let the student/parent know what type of further help the student needs, and if possible provide a recommendation of how to find it.
All types. Some just needed a bit of confirmation or review, some needed help with a specific topic, some needed more widespread help, and some were just looking to get the answers (in this last case things generally did not work out very well).
At this level, math starts to get somewhat tricky, but once you get the hang of it it becomes a lot less difficult.
I recently had a student who clearly was capable at the math, but was having trouble parsing the word problem to understand what mathematical question it was asking. After helping her, I mentioned that I noticed that issue, and she agreed that that was her weak spot. I therefore suggested that she get help specifically with language issues, as this seemed the most likely to help her.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Try to identify as best you can what you're having trouble with; the more information the tutor has, the better he or she can help you. But if you're not sure, the tutor can probably help with that as well.

Details
I generally charge $30/hour. However, if the tutoring job requires travel, I include half the travel time (which must be public transportation, as I live in the city and do not own a car) together with the tutoring time. (If the student wishes to have tutoring at my apartment or a library nearby, or over the internet, there is no additional charge. At the moment, internet tutoring is only available for customers interested in long-term tutoring, since it will require me to leave my current online tutoring job.)
