About Jake
My name is Jake Deschamps. I have an MS in Mechanical Engineering from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. I have been tutoring in the Tri-Valley and surrounding area for six years, and I pride myself on being able to explain complex mathematical concepts in several different ways, ultimately finding one that resonates with the student. I have had success working with students across the board: from those tackling college Calculus to those trying to pass their last required math class.
I love being present when a student is finally able to crack a difficult problem, or grasp a tough concept. Steering the student toward that moment of understanding is an excellent experience. I also never shy away from the eternal question of, "How is this useful?" If the student is curious about where a formula comes from or where it is applied in the real world, I never hesitate to explain.
I started working at an after school center in 2016. I enjoyed the work and began taking private clients.
I have a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from California Polytechnic State University, six years of experience working at an after school center, and around the same amount of time teaching students privately.

I assess their primary areas for improvement while covering their first assignment. I also make sure that they have the appropriate tools. A suitable calculator, quality geometry supplies (if needed), and of course, the right paper, pencils, and erasers can make a big difference!
I have taught kindergarteners basic counting, college students the essentials of calculus, and most subjects in-between.
Avoid waiting until you feel like you are far behind. It is substantially less stressful to overcome a small deficit than a large one.
One student is having success reducing her anxiety toward math. Her mother recently informed me that the student earnestly said she felt she was understanding the material.
