About Taran

I worked at a tutor at the University of Nevada, Reno, Math Center on a daily basis for the last 3 years. Before that, I had over 2 years of tutoring experience. Moreover, as a UNR Math Center tutor, I received extensive training on tutoring students and received a CRLA certification for my tutoring skills. I have a B.S. in Mathematics from UNR and am currently a graduate at UNR studying Pure Mathematics. Also, I am a mathematics teaching assistant currently at the university. Math is truly my passion and I look forward to helping you out with it.

Working as a tutor at the Math Center, my absolute favorite thing was watching students go from being shaky and nervous when doing math to growing into a more confident, curious, and independent problem solver. It was incredibly rewarding to tutor students over the years and watch them steadily improve as they reaped the benefits of their hard work.

I got started tutoring in high school in various subjects like mathematics and physics. However, where I truly discovered my passion for tutoring was while working as a tutor at the University of Nevada, Reno, Math Center. There, I was able to help students on a daily basis and help them discover their passion for math and physics.

I recently graduate with a B.S. in Mathematics and a minor in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Nevada, Reno. While at UNR, I worked as a tutor at the UNR Math Center on a daily basis. I tutored students in a wide variety including Algebra, Calculus, Physics, Topology and Statistics. I was promoted to Shift Leader, which meant it was my job to teach the new tutors the best way to tutor students. The UNR Math Center has regular training sessions for their tutors which resulted in us receiving CRLA tutoring certification. Before attending UNR, I had over 2 years of experience with tutoring. Currently, I am working towards my Master's degree in Pure Mathematics and work as a teaching assistant for UNR.

My typical process for working with a new student is getting an idea of what the student's goals are when it comes to the tutoring session and then working from their. For example, if a student wants to practice a particular concept, I can come up with example problems and ensure they're doing the problem correctly. If a student wants to learn an entirely new topic, I can help to motivate and explain the material that would be presented. If a student is struggling with a particular concept, I can ask questions and examples to pinpoint where exactly the issue is and then work from there.

At the Math Center, tutors were on standby and simply tutored students whenever they raised their hands. As a result, I have worked with hundreds of different students over the years and helped many different types of students. I have extensive experience tutoring college students. I have tutored students with learning and communication disabilities. I have also tutored younger students from Elementary School to High School. I have tutored students whose goal is to simply pass the class and I have tutored students who are very advanced and intensely curious about the nuances and motivation of the subject.

My best advice is to hire a tutor who understands and empathizes with your goals. Many tutors take over the tutoring session and just do problems themselves because that's what they are comfortable with. However, this is not, in fact, the correct way to tutor. The student does not learn efficiently this way. Instead, the tutor should understand your goals and custom tailor their tutoring to your individual needs. For example, if you would like to ace your upcoming exam, the tutor should pinpoint your weakness within the subject, isolate the issue within a certain type of concept, and create custom problems for you to practice on while they supervise and correct you.

A recent even I am fond of when it comes to tutoring occured during the summer session at UNR. One particular student was very nervous and hesitant when it came to Calculus due to the condensed time frame for the class. However, they came in to the Math Center on a daily basis and by the end of the session, they were so advanced that they were teaching other students how to do homework problems in the class.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are my goals when it comes to the subject?

Am I primarily focused on getting a good grade in the class?

I am curious about the subject and want to deeply learn the material with a highly developed intuition for the subject?

Do I want a tutor for the long term to provide me with consistent practice, supervision, and explantion, or do I need a tutor for the short term to help me prepare for an upcoming exam?

How much am I will to invest in my education?

Would I prefer an expert tutor with extensive experience, training, and knowledge, or am I okay with a less qualified tutor?

Do I want a tutor who will help me skate by or who will teaching you independent studying skills and curiosity as tutoring progresses?

I charge $65 dollars per hour for any subjects that come before Calculus like Algebra, Pre-Algebra, and Trigonometry.

I charge $75 dollars per hour for introductory college level math courses like Calculus I, II, and III, Physics, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, and Statistics.

I charge $85 dollars per hour for advanced college level math courses like Proofs, Analysis, Number Theory, and Topology.

This is on the higher end of tutor pricing and reflects my extensive knowledge, experience, education and communication skills. My goal is ultimately to help students to become independent and curious learners.
