About Jessica
Hi! I'm Jessica. I am a senior at Columbia University majoring in astrophysics. I am passionate about education and love helping students understand concepts better. Education is empowerment, and we need a new generation of competent, STEM-literate people!
In college, I have taken Calculus I-IV and Linear Alegebra, as well as physics classes including Mechanics, Electricity & Magnetism, Waves & Optics, and Quantum Mechanics. I have been a TA for introductory astronomy courses for three years, and have tutored all age levels in math. I also graduated high school from an International Baccalaureate Program, taking Higher Level Math, Physics, and Chemistry. CV is available upon request.
Teaching experience:
-Tutor of kindergarten through second grade math for Reading Team Math, the math branch of a Harlem literacy program. (2017-2020)
-Teaching Assistant for three introductory astronomy courses: Earth, Moon, and Planets (Spring 2019 and Spring 2020), Stars and Atoms (Fall 2019), and Stars, Galaxies, and Cosmology (Fall 2018)
-Private tutor of 6th-7th grade math and pre-algebra (2014-2016)
-Lots of babysitting experience with kids aged 2-14, including homework help in math, science, Spanish, ELA, and social studies. (2013-2020)
I love watching students begin to understand a concept and seeing their confidence grow as they learn that they are capable of doing well in math and science. I think equipping students for success, especially in STEM, is very important, and am excited to continue to do this kind of work.

With new students, I typically begin with a basic session to see where they're at in terms of how competent they feel with their coursework. We get into some of their homework together or do exercises that let me better understand their strengths and weaknesses so I can tailor lessons to them.
