About Philip
If you've reached the point where you're reading this then hopefully you have a desire to achieve and succeed and are just needing a bit of extra help getting there. Bring a little willingness and desire to learn and you'll be amazed at what you can achieve. My goal is to encourage and cultivate that desire into success both on paper and in life. Learning can have its difficulties but the reward is life changing and you've just taken a step in the right direction.
I enjoy watching the change come over a student as the rewards of self-confidence, knowledge and wisdom come from the small (at first) but growing list of successes. I have a degree in education and experience as a teacher of several years. I've worked with ages children to adult, however success is not lecturing in front of classroom. Success starts by showing that learning can not only be interesting and fun but it can give you the tools you need to shape your own future if you're willing to put in the effort.
I went to a high school baseball game with a friend and teacher and met a man who just seemed very talkative and asked a lot of questions. At the end of the game he announced that he was the principal and wanted to hire me.

To reach out to a tutor you are hoping to achieve a goal or two. Hopefully it isn't just the parents who want to achieve. Finding out your goals and ascertaining how I can help you achieve them is my first step. Keeping those goals shining in front of you is my second. Learning can be fun but it can also be hard work. Knowing that the work is worth the effort is a value that will help you in many areas of your life.
Mostly elementary age with a mix of high school, college, and adult. I was a Study Skills coordinator for struggling HS students. I taught an ESL class for a group of adults. I was a motivational speaker and class leader for college age to adult individuals.
Education is hard work sometimes but it can also be fun. Look for a teacher who motivates you to want to learn more and makes learning interesting. Don't be afraid to ask questions and, if possible, speak to former students or look at the reviews of previous students.
When I was a child I remember struggling with long division. In an Army class there was an element that required long division in which several individuals failed. I spoke to the drill instructor and asked if I could teach a brief lesson on division. Four individuals .... in ARMY Basic Training.... high school GRADUATES, came up to me and told me that they had never understood division until that moment.
Spending three days getting a pair of homeschooled sisters caught up in math after having been months behind.
Seeing that light of understanding spread across a student's face. I love those moments.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
If you are taking the step to talk to a teacher about needs then you are taking a step to get help. If a teacher asks what your goal is, put some thought into it. Maybe you are there to get a better grade on the next test but a good teacher will show you a love for learning that will open your eyes to see new things for the rest of your life.
How do you develop motivation in a student?
How do you help a student deal with disappointment, self-doubt and struggle?
What is your greatest educational achievement? (Hint- if they give the highest degree they've earned then maybe look elsewhere. "Pass on what you have learned." - Yoda Successfully passing on is the greatest achievement of a good teacher.)

Mr. Schratweiser is a patient and engaging teacher. He makes learning fun and interesting. He is fair to all different kinds of learners and is attentive to special needs. I always felt like he cared about me as a student. Would definitely recommend him to anyone!
.
Mr. Schratwieser always used unique methods to help us learn rather than by-the-book methods which are easily forgotten.
Phil, aka Mr. Schratwieser, is a wonderful educator and mentor. He stands out as an amazing teacher and mentor of mine during a very formative time in my life.
I had the pleasure of working with this Teacher for several years!! He is an EXCELLENT TEACHER...very knowledgeable & cares deeply for his Students making sure they gain the knowledge he is teaching them!! I HIGHLY recommend him, & to this day, I have NEVER forgotten the impact he made on me & his Students!!
It was my fourth grade year and I had a significantly rough home life. Going to class became a joy because my teacher had grown to also be a father figure/older brother as well as my educator. I remember our history lessons most of all because each was taught with an enthusiasm; I can still see the maroon paperback cover on our textbook and I remember how excited my teacher was to bring history to life for us. I can still remember the baseball cards he’d give as rewards for work done well. It was the start of my collection and it is my deepest regret that they’ve gotten lost over the years. Being treated like family was what made the experience remarkable. Knowing that no matter how ostracized you could feel your teacher saw you and was willing to boost your morale made the greatest impact. I remember the little things that were done with great care the most; little things that showed us that our overall success, not just success in his class, was what was important. He taught with a desire to edify and encourage. My life was changed that year. I will forever remember him as my greatest teacher and cheerleader.
Phil always took a personal interest my student. His relaxed and friendly manner made him a joy to work with. He is a terrific educator who is caring, dependable and knowledgeable.
He was a great example of being intentional about improving the students, not just academically, but all-around.
Mr. Schratwieser made learning fun. From an environmental standpoint, he was able to harness all his student personalities and provide an learning experience that was creatively productive. As his student, I was able to excel academically while gaining a understanding of how to maintain a positive moral compass. One of my best teachers ever.
Mr. Schratweiser was one of the most influential teachers I ever had growing up. He was very supportive not only inside the classroom but outside of it! He came to support me as well as other students of his play little league baseball on several occasions! I hold my memories of Mr. Schratweiser in high regard! Great guy!
