Paul is a respected member of our tutor community. He is highly recommended for his commitment and the quality of his lessons. An excellent choice to progress with confidence.
About Paul
I do extra work, outside of our tutoring sessions, to help prepare my students; for each student, I may create worksheets, videos or motivational messages to help progression. I take time to diagnose baseline issues and then along the way, I design Action Plans to help the student excel; I give regular feedback on progress. I have a strong science, mathematics and English background; BS Biology with focus in English; Registered Pharmacist; 5 years cancer research experience with 2 years graduate courses in Immunology.
I enjoy seeing the student improve performance in school; with that, the student develops confidence and an enhanced view of what is possible! I enjoy motivating students to rise up, persist and push through difficulties; I also enjoy diagnosing areas for improvement and then thinking through small ways to bring BIG changes for each student.
I have a natural gift of explaining hard stuff in a way that you can get it and back in college, I helped some classmates with Medicinal Chemistry and the rest is now history!
BS in Biology, intensive concentration in English; Appalachian State University
Registered Pharmacist (BS degree); The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Graduate coursework in Microbiology/Immunology; Duke University
5 years of laboratory research experience in cancer research; Duke University

They can call me or email me and we set up a time to talk through the needs and goals of the student; we both set up a strategy on exceeding the goal!
Ages ranged from 5-56 years old; people who want to better their lives to obtain entry into professional programs; students needing encouragement to keep going and get through a key area in their studies. I also teach surfing, and have taught 31 people to surf.
Search for someone who can actually talk with you and relate to you; you also need encouragement and motivation so your best tutor (the best for YOU) can teach you subject matter and also encourage and motivate you.
A recent student (Organic Chemistry) came to much better understand Carbon and its key role in life through our specialized work together; this increased her understanding and performance in the class!
A current student (English) gained official admission into a program designed to help him reach his goal of teaching English overseas, through our work together!
A recent student (College Algebra) gained an understanding of quadratic equations and factoring through our work together!
A recent student (Algebra 1) gained study skills and a much deeper understanding of polynomials through our work together and showed a rise in his confidence and performance!
Another current student (Algebra 1) has gained a lot of confidence through our intensive work on the fundamentals of algebraic math; she is now functioning at a high B average, up from a high D average when we first started working together!
A current student (Elementary Math) has gained confidence and a newfound senses of enjoyment about math. She is now showing B level grades, up from D level from when we first started our work together!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
One key point here is: the student has to have the mindset to work/study when not in class or tutoring with me! Hard work ALWAYS pays off. So, the student needs to self-reflect and ask themselves: Am I really prepared to work hard to learn and improve?

Perfect! Paul has been a great math tutor for my 12 year old daughter! Not only does he have a wonderful personality and put my very shy daughter at ease, but he stays in total contact with me to let me know exactly what they've worked on, where she needs improvement and what he thinks is the best plan of action. He's always upbeat and positive which works wonders for my daughter and her grades have improved since week 1!! I couldn't have asked for a better tutor if I tried. I am extremely happy and if Addy (my daughter) ever needs help in the future with her math, I know exactly who I'm turning too :)
Perfect! Paul is the best! He tutors my 11 year old daughter with her 6th grade math. My daughter has struggled for a few years now and it’s been so hard to find the right person to really help her understand her math, even family! When I saw Paul’s profile I just knew I had to give him a shot. From day one it has been a total success! On the first call he even managed to make her feel comfortable in trusting him by giving her information on his background and why he loves to do what he does. He even went the extra mile and asked my daughter questions about herself and took interest in her and what she had to say. My daughter has had 4 sessions with him and already she has caught up on so much work as well as being able to solve more and more math problems on her own. We have gone over word problems, to decimals, multiplying and dividing and Paul has found a way to get through to her that makes her feel like she actually understands and confidence that she can do this. I strongly recommend that you give Paul a chance in helping turn your child’s worries around. Flexible hours and low price, what more can you ask for?
Perfect! Fantastic tutor! Friendly, easy to communicate with and very flexible. He listened to my concerns and developed a plan for my 8th grader who was struggling in Algebra. My daughter has received two online tutoring sessions from Paul and there has been vast improvement in her understanding of the fundamental concepts as well as her confidence in math. He breaks down the problems, takes his time explaining, provides useful tools and is very encouraging. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a tutor that is passionate about teaching and provides quality results.
Perfect! I'm currently studying College Algebra. I went in not having a good handle on the subject but within a week Paul Gainey had me up to speed. I was very nervous starting out but he has a great way of putting someone at ease with words of encouragement. As we went over problems, he broke each step down in an easy to understand way. I appreciated the fact that he would stop to answer any questions I had, and I had a lot, before moving on. Paul ensured that I could not only do the problem, but that I understood the problem. He ensured that I understood why we were doing each step and in doing so I was able to handle problems on my own. I highly recommend hiring him if you are need of a tutor. You won't be disappointed.
Perfect! Paul was great to work with. He took his time and really explained the algebra that my son was having trouble with. He was very encouraging about what my son does well and made him really feel like he could master algebra!! We did our tutoring over facetime, since we do not live very close, and that worked very well! I would highly recommend Paul for an Algebra tutor and will contact him again if my younger son needs any help!!
Perfect! Very detailed, courtesy, genuine concern and flexibility.
Perfect! Very helpful!! He helped me understand the topic in a broken down way. He was very easy to understand and allowed me to ask questions as well as review with me multiple times in order to truly understand it.
Perfect! Listened to my wants and needs and adjusted plan accordingly
Perfect! he has been the best tutor ever! very easy to understand and breaks everything down on a level that you can understand and comprehend. The best tutor hands down!
Perfect! Knowledgeable and friendly

Paul was absolutely fantastic! He helped me understand the material that I had been struggling with and answered all my questions very throughly. He is very smart and pushed me to my fullest potential even though he had only known me for a short time! I will definitely be using Paul in the future for any classes I am struggling with- and you should too!
Teacher was fun, engaging, and knowledgeable. He made learning fun and was able to help me understand difficult concepts. Highly recommend!
