About Rich
I studied Music Performance with a concentration in Drums and Percussion studies. I am a full time performing professional musician working within the community and music industry. I have a classical background of study therefore my background and vocuabulary is a very wide range of study. I am comfortable teaching young beginner students as well as working with older students looking to fine tune or focus their study with something specific.
When it comes to teaching its the joy of watching my students connect with the joy of what I love most, which is music, drums and percussion! I am fortunate to be a working musician and there is nothing better than putting years of hard work to use teaching and performing regularly. I hope that every one finds work that they are passionate about as I have come to do so with teaching and performing.
I naturally fell into the opportunity and took advantage of college mentor programs that allowed for students such as myself to grow. I taught lessons privately and continued onto teaching larger percussion ensembles as an extracirruclar activity with local school programs.
My degree is in Music Performance with a concentration in Percussion Study. My love for teaching comes from spending the first few semesters studying Music Education yet never completing the degree but switched to Music Performance.
I have been playing for over ten years now and my professional opportunites begain while I was in college and has continued to grow since. I have appeared in Music Videos, performed in studio recordings for celebrities, I regularly perform within my community and with musicians throught-out the Northeast Region. In 2011 I found my own Percussion trio that operated for almost six years focusing on performing contemporary and traditional percussion ensemble music. Today I manage a private studio of students, offer lessons online, teach multiple percussion ensembles and in between manage a full time performing schedule. I like to say that I have regular practice with what I preach which is what has lead to my effectiveness as a educator. Teaching lessons is not just a hobby for me.

I typically try to evalute three things:
1. Assess each students current skill level. I get just as many beginner students as I do students that have been playing so evaluating their abilities is important.
2. Long and Short Term goals - It is important to me that we have a plan and regularly have goals in mind so our time together is effective and what we study is purposeful.
3. Fundamentals - After finding a balancing between my first two steps I pair it with music fundamentals. It is important to me that I am educating through lessons and not just entertaining. Occasionally I get students that come to me from previous instructors and have spent minimal time preparing fundamental materials such as reading music, learning to play in time with a metronome, rudimental vocabulary, learning to play musically and finally how to practice your instrument! For my younger students I want to get them off on the right foot so that than can be sucessful in the classroom and for my experienced players I want them to have the abiity to continually set goals for themselves to keep growing!
For Parents I always say that it can take three sessions to get into the swing of things when we begin. I also tell them that it gives them the time to figure out if I am the right teacher for them! All things considered when starting new students.
I currently have students starting as young as 3rd grade. These students come to me because they express an interest in getting started but may not have the opportunity to take lessons in a school program until 4th or 5th grade pending on the school. In addition to young school students I have worked with High Schoolers as the prepare for college auditions and even students in college looking for sessions to plan, prepare or study something specific. Finally, I have quite a few adults that I work with that come to me to improve their skillsets to carry on to a band that they are in, worship team they are in and even just those looking to have the regular discipline of practicing and studying music as a new found hobby or joy.
-Always ask a teacher about their cirriculum or materials they use.
-Be open to the idea that sometimes the instructor you find is not a perfect match and thats ok. One on one instructor is very valuable but you want to make sure you can develop good chemistry with the person you are studying from.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I always encourage the following:
-Are you prepared to have extra homework during the week? Practicing any musical instrument takes time and effort, just like have an extra homework assignment.
-Do you have an instrument at home to use, a plan to purchase a new one or have something to borrow or lease. A Music instrumnet can be an investment but its necessary to succeed.
-Are you prepared to invest time as there is no instant gratification in the process of learning music. It takes time but their is alot of joy in the process and theres nothing better after seeing hard work pay off when you are off and performing!
-What are your goals for taking lessons? Do you want to perform something specific, are you joining a band? Do you want to join the band or orchestra at school someday?

Details
I like to scheudle a few month in advance to make sure I am avaialble for my students. I dont charge a start up fee and I am open to having an irregular schedule for those that may have difficult school or work schedules to get around.
30 Minute Session - Standard - $25 a session
45 Minutes Session - $35 a session
60 minute Sesson - $50 a session
