About John
I stress the elements of design. I believe that regardless of your medium...oil, acrylic, collage, photography...it's a strong composition and masterful use of design elements that make an image "work". Everything else...brush strokes, color combinations, textures, marks...is part of your personal expression (like your "handwriting"), and cannot really be taught, but it simply evolves over years of experience. I can save you years of bad paintings by showing you how to use values, lines, and abstract shapes in a way that creates a strong and compelling structure.
I've been a professional painter for 20 years (acrylic and oil, though I have focused on traditional oil painting for the last 10 years). I focus on representational interpretations of nature, mostly landscapes and waterscapes. I do not paint people, portraits, watercolor or abstract art, as they are each unique avenues of study that take years to master.
My teaching style is to work one-on-one with a student who already has some intermediate level of understanding of basic principles and who wants to improve their techniques and learn how to improve their design skills. What we work on together depends on where the student is and where they want to go. I can help guide you in the direction you want to go and even help you find a direction if you don't know yet. Ultimately I want to help you see and think like an artist and to simplify and demystify the whole process of painting so you get to the joy.
I find painting to be rewarding in many ways, and a form of meditation that brings focus and creative energy into one's experience. As much as I love to create a piece, it is just as rewarding to watch a collector fall in love with it. I consider it the ultimate compliment and honor when a piece is chosen to be part of someone's home decor. I like to think of my sold paintings as out there in the world fulfilling their purpose...to make people happy.
I am self-taught, mostly through books and 20 years of experience.

I’ll meet with a student, ascertaining the direction they want to go and where they currently are, and put together a lesson plan with them that will guide them in that direction. I teach the elements of design more than particular techniques.
