About ROBERT
The head instructor at 5.0 Evolved Martial Arts Redlands is Mr. Robert Sotomayor. Mr. Sotomayor has trained in American Kenpo for 25+ years. He has been studying Kenpo under Mr. Speakman for the past 16 years and holds a 6th Degree in Kenpo, He also has studied Judo for over 40 years and is certified by the United States Judo Association as a 3rd Degree Black Belt (SanDan).
Jeff Speakman’s Kenpo 5.0 is the hybrid of the last generation version of American Kenpo taught directly from Senior Grand Master Ed Parker to Jeff Speakman and ground fighting brought into the equation by several of Mr. Speakman’s students' training and experiences in modern MMA. It is important to recognize that this is not cage fighting but an expanding philosophy of Kenpo to produce the Kenpo ground system coupled with training drills and sparring techniques. It is evolving the existing 4.0 system while remaining completely within the combat models and thinking of American Kenpo to address the increasing and prevalent void of ground fighting in the Kenpo world, due to the evolution of MMA and the grappling arts.
I love sharing my knowledge of martial arts and more specifically teaching students how to defend themselve in any situation and seeing the confidence they gain from knowing that they can defend themselves but more so that they have the confidence to walk away knowing that they don't have to prove themselves to anyone.
I've been teaching for over 25 years. I had a great role model and instructor when I was a child. He gave me great opportunities to better myself through martial arts and when I got my black belt I knew I needed to teach others as a way to honor my instructor as well as to pay it forward.
Mr. Sotomayor has been training in martial arts for over 40 years, he holds black belts in 5.0 Kenpo Karate and Judo. Over the years he also studied Jui-Jitsu, Aikido, Muai-Tai kickboxing. He was a high level Jr. Judo Competitor and as an Adult he was the heavy weight sport fighting champion for the World Karate Organization. He retired from the WKO without a loss. He grew up in New York City and because of his experiences growing up in NYC he helps students to understands the expectations and the steps needed to both avoid a confrontation as well as how to protect yourself when there's no other choice.

We will contact you to determine what your goals are and what you looking for in your training. Discuss prior experience or knowledge of martial arts. Discuss your current fitness levels. We will then discuss scheduling and determining where training will occur. Lastly we will schedule our 1st appointment.
I have worked with kids from the age of 3 and up. Kids with special needs such as autism, ADD, ADHD, children who are wheel chair bound. I've worked with older adults who have never done martial arts but decided later in life they wanted to try it. No matter the age martial arts is a great activity for all ages and we look to share it with anyone looking to learn.
If your looking for a martial arts instructor, be sure to talk to them before you begin taking classes. Understand their ideas and philosophies around teaching and the art that they teach. Make sure what they teach is not a 1 size fits all kind of martial arts because that's not always the case, especially if you have injuries or other health issues.

$85 per hour, $65 per 1/2 Hour. We do charge a travel fee of $20 if you request in home personal training.
