About Gregory

I became an FAA Certified Flight Instructor 27 years ago and love helping people reach their dreams. That same passion transferred over to photography back in 2008 when I started a photography club in my community and has comtinued ever since.

I have been a Commercial photographer for 27 years. I began doing Aerial photography as part of my Flight Instruction business in 1994. In 2005, I was hired by a photography studio in Ft Wayne and was second shooter at weddings. In 2010, I was hired by a studio in Cincinnati and continued to shoot weddings as primary and second shooter until 2015. In 2012 I became a part time corporate photographer and in 2014 a full time photographer for the company shooting products, group photos, events, aerial (drone) photography. I expanded into food (restaurant) and interior (real estate) photograph which I still do. Two years ago I changed jobs and now teach college UAS (drone) classes and have a photography business on the side.

The experience level of the student will determine the process. What does the student already know. Based on that, I take the building blocks approach. For beginners, I start with the basics and build from there. Usually the next topic requires knowledge and understanding of the previous learning block. I make it clear from the start that there are no dumb questions. The student's questions are key to evaluating how the student is progressing and what areas I need to expand on or if I can move on the next topic. It is also very important that the student knows that I will be patient with them and not take anything for granted as far as their experience level or how quickly they pick up on things. Student frustration is the last thing we want in a training environment.

My students have ranged from 16 to 94 years old and everything in between. Most students are beginners but there are some that know their camera well and are good at composition and subject matter but have little or no experience or knowledge in off camera lighting and putting it all together.

Instead of trying to learning everything about photography, select one specific kind of photography you really want to learn about first (portraiture, products for Ebay, real estate, sports, etc.). You will pick up on the topics quicker if you have an interest in a specific style or aspect of photography. You can build on to other type of photography from there.

Over the holidays I went to numerous communities and took aerial twight photos of their Christmas light displays at sunset. That was a lot of fun and definitely got us in the Christmas spirit

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
When I first started in photography, I learned everthing I could about my camera and knew how to access every feature it had. The problem was that I had no idea when I should use a feature and when I shouldn't use it. What were they for?

Based on the type of photography you want to do, research what camera features are best for that type of photography. Some features are better for sports, some better for portraiture, etc. Knowing your camera inside and out is the first step in the training. Students should be asking what camera setting are best for specific scenarios. This will be the starting point of the training process.

For beginner level students I charge $25/hour. For intermediate level students I charge $32/hour and for advanced students I charge $39/hour. I also rent camera and lighting equipment that I normally charge $59/day which includes camera, lighting, light modifier and trigger system. It's a kit designed for portraits or groups/families up to 6 people. Lessons students would get a 25% discount on the equipment rental during training.
