About Mark
Hello, all! I have maintained a full studio of 49 students in my studio located here in Alaska, whom I teach online too. I have taught about 150+ students successfully in my area. Lessons are available for anyone in the world, including all fifty states. Lessons are conducted in English. I currently teach from preschoolers starting at age 3 to advanced adults. I like teaching students a variety of music styles to allow them to be a more rounded musician. I am currently the Chairman of the NFMC in my state. My students participate in recitals, festivals, competitions, and local school talent shows. I manage and plan meetings in my local town for piano teachers to discuss from festival planning, and teaching ideas. There is a focus on classical music in my studio. I have created many unique methodologies that detail how to learn and memorize music with maximum efficiency (much more information a few paragraphs down). And of course, I show my students how to conquer technical and musical difficulties in order to develop into artists with their own voices. As a result, my students often progress extremely quickly and attain high levels of playing in a fraction of the usual time required. They also seem to truly enjoy the process. Lessons take place online in the comfort in your home. I teach students all around the country from Alaska to California to New York. But I do travel to some in the Homer Communities and Kenai/Soldotna area. I'm primarily an online teacher, so I can teach to anyone around the country. My home studio contains an upright "Ashburn" piano for use of the lessons. Although I have the most experience teaching piano, I also instruct music theory, and basic cello. I am a current Thumbtack Top Pro and teach full-time. At this point, I only accept students who will take long-term, weekly lessons. I now offer two student recitals for all ages (see my pictures!) and National Federation of Music Club's Festival(adjudication event with judges!) I have taught students of all ages (3 and up) and abilities for over 18 years. I have prepared students for recitals, competitions, festival, and college prep auditions. Of course, I have also taught many students who are learning just for fun or just for themselves. If you are a beginner and/or don't know how to read sheet music, I can definitely help you! If you are interested in learning how to play the piano while singing, I can definitely help you as well. My teaching methodology includes how to learn and memorize with maximum efficiency (I have spent the last few years specifically researching and creating many methodologies); how to solve technical / mechanical / relaxation issues (including how to achieve much greater speed and control); how to express yourself musically and connect with your inner self; how to practice physically, mentally, and emotionally; how to set and achieve goals; how to use both motivation and willpower to your advantage; and much more besides. This helps to unlock the door to true musical expression. My preferred choice of curriculum is Faber Piano Adventure's or Alfred Premier Piano Course for beginners due to the constant hand changes to help aid prepare for RCM exam's and graded literature in the foreseeable future. I was born and raised in Alaska, I have lived in Asia for 3 years. Online Lessons are $70 for one hour, $52.50 for 45 minutes and $35 for half an hour. One of my piano instructor's actually told me to post an ad for piano lessons because she felt like I would benefit from explaining begineer piano lessons. Ever since that, my studio has expanded from part time to full time. She was a part time instructor.
I have attended 10 years of private piano lesson instruction under the instruction of Emily Grossman, Kristine Dohse, Katie Evans and Rosemary Pilatti. I have done extensive research into learning and memorization methods. As a result, I have developed methodologies for maximum efficiency and results that include mental practicing, practicing in sets, spaced repetition, interleaving of tasks, and many other practicing methods.

My teaching methodology includes how to learn / memorize faster and more efficiently (I have spent the last few years specifically researching and creating many methodologies); how to solve technical / mechanical / relaxation issues; how to express yourself musically and connect with your inner self; how to practice physically, mentally, and emotionally; how to set and achieve goals; and much more besides.
I have taught students of all ages and abilities - from kids as young as 3 and a half years old to teenagers, adults, and older students. And my students have taken lessons with me for all sorts of reasons - to just have some fun, to pass examinations and auditions, to achieve specific personal goals, to make music a part of their lives, to grow both as musicians and as people, and to go on to professional music careers.
I always require prospective students to schedule a trial lesson. It is a good idea to meet with a few teachers to see who is the best fit for you. In addition to things like convenient location and pricing, I would also consider the manner in which a teacher communicates ideas, what subjects a teacher covers, and if there is flexibility in creating a curriculum that suits your goals. Learning piano needs patience and persistence. It takes time to see your progress sometimes, but don't feel frustrated about it too much. Regular practice and communication with teacher will be the essential to pass this period. Some teachers ascribe to one method or style of teaching (for example, teachers who only use books from one publisher, or teachers who submit students to annual music exams which have required repertoire that takes months to prepare), which can sometimes limit how and what a student learns. If those are your goals, that's great too!

Mark is one of the best piano teachers I know. I used to co-teach with him, and through years of experience he has become a phenomenal teacher. He uses techniques and exercises that excite and enrapture students of all ages, particularly children. Mark equips students with the tools needed to find their musical voice. I would highly recommend Mark to all who are wanting to learn piano.
Mark is a fantastic teacher. He's very patient and kind, he's interested in allowing students to learn what they want to learn instead of only learning one type of music style. His prices are fair and reasonable. I cannot recommend Last Frontier Piano Studio enough!
