About Christine
Want to learn to create your own costumes or sew a dress? I have 45+ years experience as a seamstress and over 22 years experience as a professional costume designer. I am known for the quality and detail of my work. I am a patient instructor and teach with positive reinforcement and hands on instruction.
I enjoy the creative process and the freedom that self-employment affords me.
I have held sewing workshops for the reenactment community in my home, as well as lectured on historical clothing topics pertaining to the 16th Century.
I learned to sew beginning at the age of 5, made my first complicated or intermedate skilled dress at the age of 12. I have 20 years experience in historical fashion design and construction and a total of 45+ years as a seamstress to include wedding gowns.
I learned to sew under the patient tutelage of my grandmother, but for the most part I am self-taught. I did attended some night classes at *New York Fashion Academy-Seattle to learn pattern drafting and draping, and then turned professional in 2012.

- Meet for coffee outside of my home/studio to get acquainted.
- Assess their current skills.
- Find out their goals and discuss student expectations versus requisite skill for projects. (Beginners: Students needs to choose a project for their "goal" to work toward and discuss the feasibility of meeting that goal as a beginner.)
I will Work to teach basic skills:
- learning the functions on their sewing machine.
- teaching how to sew a straight line, how to sew around a curve, and learning to control your fabric or garment while sewing.
- How to gather.
- How to pleat.
- Teach hand sewing techniques necessary for hemming, etc.,
- teach how to install a zipper.
- Learn about fabrics via field trip to JoAnns fabrics in Puyallup to teach how to choose the correct weight and fiber content for a respective project.
- Learn to read the back of a pattern.
- How to take measurements and MUCH MORE.
- Complete a simple project utilizing the skills you have learned.
PLEASE NOTE: I will only take students who are either fully vaccinated for COVID 19 or willing to wear a mask. I am severely asthmatic and cannot take the risk as my life depends on it. Please, MUST show proof that you have been vaccinated by providing your physical vaccination card issued either by the CDC or a reputable pharmacy or clinic. I will not accept digital copies or photocopies. Masks may also be required. Non negotiable.
Additionally, I will ONLY focus on basic sewing skills for modern clothing for beginner students. Once you have basic skills, then you can graduate to a project for historical clothing if you desire.

I have worked with novices mostly. I took on an apprentice who was a novice and within the first year I was able to level up her skills so that she was ready to learn corsetry and other complex techniques.
Please know, patience will be the key to your success.
Reviews are not exactly going to be a guarantee of the quality of instruction you can expect. After YEARS of people asking me if I offer classes, I have only recently decided to begin teaching in order for students to enjoy the benefit of my vast experience. I would look at the bulk of an instructors work and judge the quality.
Furthermore, it will be essential for a student to have attainable goals and set reasonable expectations for themselves. My instruction is only one phase - your willingness to practice, to study, and to even fail are essential to your success. How often you sew and practice those skills taught will determine your true growth.
I am a facilitator of knowledge, but the student MUST be prepared to pay their dues, metaphorically speaking, and do the physical work for however long it takes to master a certain skill. There are NO short cuts. After 45+ years I am STILL learning.
Be TEACHABLE. Ask questions if you don't fully understand. Make no assumptions and blunder forward. Take NOTES for you to be able to refer to. Build your reference library!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
First, go back and read the prior questions and answers I have provided:
More relevant, here are the questions "I" ask my students:
1 - What is your goal for learning to sew? In other words, what is your motivation to learn this new skill? Is there a project you have in the back of your mind that you would be working toward. Be prepared to take baby steps. I will advance your knowledge each time you learn and master a particular skill.
2 - What kind of machine do you operate? (This is relevant because some machines cannot sew correctly on heavier fabrics.) I operate a semi-professional Juki that will sew through some types of leather, and also have a Brother Sewing machine.
3 - How much time are you willing to put into practicing on your own time? If you only sew on the days we meet, you won't advance as quickly. For those who find a passion for sewing, your projects can be endless if you are willing to put forth the effort.
4 - Are you willing to dedicate no less than 6 months to a year to master the basic techniques? There are NO shortcuts in sewing. You cannot take a handful of classes and expect to tackle an intermediate or expert level pattern - say for instance a wedding dress or a corset! Learning the requisite skill is trial and error, with lots of failure. You will pick out a million seams and start over for as many times as it takes to get it right. That's how I was taught. If that sounds daunting, you aren't ready to tackle this new skill.
5 - Sewing is completely different from designing and learning to draft patterns. In the fashion industry it is extremely RARE that someone has the skillset I do and can design a garment and sketch it out; take that sketch and drape it on a dress form; then convert your draped design into a flat pattern; then take that pattern and create a finished garment. Seamstresses sew. Designers Design. Pattern makers drape and draft patterns. However, to be a successful "designer" knowing the basics of construction are essential. What you will learn from me is basic sewing techniques NOT design work, draping, or drafting - however, I am willing to discuss offering those kinds of classes once you've gained the skills.

The knowledge and know how of her history and sewing is immensely huge. She is really well at explaining and showing you how and what needs to be done to complete a beautiful garment. From patterns to proper stitches she has all the knowledge one will need. I would hire her again For a one-on-one lesson. You should as well.
