About Melissa
My motto is "This is a safe place." Melissa's Voice Studio was founded to help singers of all ages and all skill levels discover their voice through learning music and theory in an enviroment where you can be yourself. Here, it's okay to make mistakes, make weird noises, and have fun while learning how to improve your voice. Whether you are a professional who is looking for some extra help, a beginner who has never had any training, someone who has trouble matching pitch, or anywhere in between, I'm here to help.
I have been teaching voice lessons for almost 4 years, specializing in classical, musical theater (including audition prep), and pop. I have some jazz experience, as well. I graduated from Eastern Washington University in 2012 with a Bachelor's Degree in English and Theater, then in 2019 with a Bachelor's Degree in Music with special emphasis on Vocal Performance. I have performed in many musical theater productions since 2007, including "Fiddler on the Roof", "Urinetown", "Sister Act", and "Sweeney Todd". I performed in one opera, "Cosi fan tutte", as Dorabella in 2016. I have 6 years of vocal training under my belt, as well. I am an active performer in the local theater community.
My passion in life is to help others find their own voice. I work with students on an individual level, diagnosing vocal issues and using different techniques to improve whatever issues are plaguing your voice. I do this through teaching songs as well as vocal exercises. My current students have seen improvement in their breath support, tone production and quality, projection, and increased ability to match pitch. I approach each student where they are, offering encouragement and praise as well as things to work on.
Sound like a studio for you? Feel free to contact me with any questions or interest. Hope to teach you soon!
My favorite thing in the world is to see a student make progress and see their eyes light up when they recognize that progress. I call them "proud mommy moments". One reason I got into teaching music in the first place was because so many young singers are beaten down. They're told they'll never be good enough, they shouldn't sing, etc. This couldn't be farther from the truth! I love seeing my students grow and learn and recognize their unique voices and embrace them.
Ever since I was a little girl, I've loved to sing. I remember walking around the house singing whatever I could and later singing with my mom while she played piano. Music saved me, as my childhood and teenage years were not easy. Music helped me cope and share love in a way nothing else could.
When I started studying the voice at college, I knew I wanted to help others find that passion, love, and safety, too. People had been asking if I taught voice lessons, but at the time, I had no training and didn't want to hurt potential students. Then I took Vocal Pedagogy and fell in love with teaching voice. After some encouragement from my teachers, I opened Melissa's Voice Studio.

During the first lesson, I ask about your goals, experience, musical tastes, and any information you think I need to know. After that, I do some vocal warm ups and have you sing a bit of a song. From there, I do some exercises based on what I hear and/or see and make a plan on how to achieve your goals.
I have worked with students as young as 4 and up to 65. Students up to 13 are taught slightly differently, as their voices are not yet matured and they need activities that engage them. I am developing a teaching method for these children so lessons are not only beneficial, but safe and fun.
Have some goals in mind when you meet with your teacher, even if it's just "I want to get better". Voice teachers are here to help you achieve your goals and if we don't know what you want out of lessons, it's hard to know how to help. And because we're here to help you improve, we don't expect you to be perfect Day 1. That's why we're here.
I was able to perform as Sister Mary Patrick in "Sister Act" last summer and had an absolute blast! It was a dream role of mine and being able to work with so many wonderful, talented people was a great experience I'll never forget.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Here are a few questions I ask my students:
1) What is your skill level?
2) What are some specific goals for your voice?
3) Do you have any health issues that will impact your ability to sing?
4) What kind of music do you already like to sing? Are there any kinds of music you would be open to learning?
5) What do you want out of lessons?
6) What is your learning style?
Questions like these will give a teacher a good idea where to start and how to help. Be open and honest with your teacher.
