About Alan

I am a recent graduate of the University of Oklahoma after attending school there as part of the University's National Merit Scholarship program.

I have been tutoring students in ACT, SAT and PSAT test prep for over a year, and the tutoring style I developed in that time revolves around finding each student's learning strengths and teaching the material in ways that play to those strengths while maintaining an engaging and fun learning environment.

I am also very familiar with the College application and testing process as a whole and in particular with the National Merit Scholarship process and I am happy to share my experience and advice in those areas.

Many of my students have seen score improvements of 4 or 5 points between their first and second tests, with one student in particular jumping from a 22 on his first test to a 32 on his third test. That, however, was a much greater return than normal, and most students see around 2-4 points of improvement

I have been involved in teaching and tutoring essentially my whole life. My parents and grandparents were teachers and administrators, so it has been in the family for a while now. I started with tutoring and mentorship programs in High School, then in college I worked with my Theater department's scenic shop teaching small groups of students how to operate the tools and build sets safely. Then, after graduation, I started test prep tutoring.

I have a BFA in Drama, emphasis in acting, and many years of experience performing and engaging rooms full of people. Thankfully that translates well into creating an engaging working environment.

Normally, I'll start a first session by going over previous tests or classwork with a student and parents to establish goals and an idea of the student's academic baseline. The student and I will then work through several problems from each of the sections of the test we are preparing for to get a sense of some of the common traps that might be causing problems as well as an understanding of the student's problem solving process. After that, if it seems like a good fit, we talk through scheduling and developing a plan going forward.

As someone with ADHD who didn't get a diagnosis until I was 22, I really enjoy and have had success working with kids with ADD and ADHD. No two people's cases are exactly alike, but it is definitely some I understand well and on a personal level.

Absolutely the most important advice I could give a student getting ready for the ACT or SAT is that no matter who the tutor is, score improvement is totally dependent on serious, committed practice.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would ask a tutor what they feel they bring to the table that is different from other tutors, and how that might help you.
