About Chalsie

I’m Chalsie. Teaching is something I’ve been passionate about since I was a young child. I pursued this passion at Slippery Rock University where I received my teaching degree to teach K - 12 Spanish. I graduated summa cum laude and soon after, was offered a teaching job at a local school district. I have been teaching there for 12 years now, but I am currently taking a year off to be at home with my children.

During these 12 years, I was the only language teacher, so I was responsible for teaching 7th and 8th grade exploratory as well as Levels 1 - 4 in the high school. This past year, I also partnered with the University of Pittsburgh to adapt my Level 4 class so that it would be equivalent to their SPA 0003. Through this program, 100% of my Level 4 students last year were able to earn 3 college credits.

I am looking forward to trying a few different teaching avenues while I am on an extended leave of absence. Throughout my 12 years of teaching, I offered after school tutoring once a week. I have always enjoyed working with students 1 on 1 or in smaller groups to provide additional support, and I look forward to doing the same through this portal.

Although I am not a native speaker, I know the struggles that I faced trying to learn Spanish as a native English speaker. I believe my own journey with learning Spanish, along with my educational and professional experiences, make me a well qualified teacher and/or tutor. Not only did I earn my bachelors in Secondary Ed./Spanish, but I also earned my masters through the University of Southern Mississippi in the Masters of Art of Teaching Languages with an emphasis in Spanish. During my undergrad, I studied abroad for a semester in Spain, and during my teaching career, I spent a month studying and volunteering in Peru. These experiences have been extremely valuable in my language learning venture.

Through teaching, I have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of my students. My number one goal is to provide my students with skills and knowledge that will lead them to become productive adults in a competitive twenty-first century. While doing that, I enjoy developing a rapport with my students and watching them become confident life-long learners.

B.A. in Secondary Education/Spanish from Slippery Rock University/  Graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 3.825 GPA.

Master or Arts in the Teaching of Modern Languages with an emphasis in Spanish from the University of Southern Mississippi.  Graduated with a 3.97 GPA.

80 hours of language learning at the Academia Latinoamericana de Espanol in Cusco, Peru along with 25 volunteer hours at an after school program.

Spent one semester studying in Alcala de Henares, Spain.  Completed 15 credits in Spanish and earned a 3.8 GPA.

First and foremost, I like to get to know my students so that I can develop a good rapport with them.  Research shows that when students have a good rapport with their teacher, their motivation is higher and there are better classroom interactions and student participation.  Not only do I get to know them as a person, but it also gives me a chance to become more familiar with the type of learner that they are and where they are struggling, which then helps guide my instruction.
