About Rita

At Black Dog Scholars LLC, we provide expert tutoring for the SAT, ACT, and other high stakes exams, as well as college essay assistance.

I am an attorney, reading specialist, and a National Board Certified Teacher with over two decades of experience working with students. I am a graduate of the University of Michigan, the University of Illinois, Northwestern University, and Northern Illinois University.

Students seek me out when they are interested in focusing on the reading, writing, and language sections of the ACT or SAT. We teach easy to remember rules, patterns of wrong answers, attention to detail, and improved reading comprehension, in a positive and warm approach. All materials are included.

I prefer to meet students and parents on Zoom for a no obligation introduction where I can get a better sense of the student's goals. Students can expect about one hour of homework for each hour of tutoring. Students should begin preparing no later than February of their junior year of high school, and be prepared to sit for the exam at least three times, including fall of their senior year.

For preparing for the reading and writing/language sections of the SAT (or the reading and English portions of the ACT), students should commit to at least five tutoring sessions.

At Black Dog Scholars LLC, we are excited to work with you! Please reach out today.

Rita Thompson is a talented and effective tutor. She is patient, kind, meticulous, and thorough. From reviewing essays to looking over LSAT necessary assumption questions, she can identify and convey the problem at hand from the students' perspective and takes necessary and methodical steps to fix it. Rita provided crucial feedback on my essay at Northwestern University and helped me get an A in a 300 level history and legal studies course. She also reviewed my scholarship application essays, and was pivotal in helping me secure a $30,000 scholarship for law school. I highly recommend Rita Thompson.

My reading and writing scores improved quite a bit and I felt more confident and sound in my work in those two sections. She provided strategies to improve my test- taking ability for the ACT.
I highly recommend Black Dog scholars!
