About Mathilde

Hi, I'm Mathilde — a native French speaker based in France, with five years of experience teaching French to English-speaking adults. I have the DAEFLE and I'm certified by the Alliance Française.
Before teaching, I was a lawyer (Master's in Law). That background brings rigor and precision to my lessons, along with the ability to hold a substantive conversation on a wide range of subjects. I've worked with journalists from The Economist, the Financial Times, and The New Yorker, senior lawyers, and a former White House director, among others. What they had in common wasn't their level — it was expecting a teacher who could meet them in their world, not follow a generic program.

I don't teach children or GCSE students — my classes are for adults only, at any level, working toward French they can genuinely use in everyday life.

Every lesson is built around you, not a fixed curriculum. I draw from a library of over 1,000 resources, so regardless of your level or interests, we'll find material that keeps you genuinely engaged, engagement is what makes learning stick.
- Fully personalized: no standard lesson plans. I follow you, not a textbook.
- Precise tracking: you'll always know where you stand and what comes next.
- You talk, a lot : I aim for a 50/50 or 60/40 speaking ratio in your favor, since active production is what builds fluency.
- Organized: I use a dedicated online workspace to share resources, so materials and progress stay easy to find between sessions.
- For advanced students: "Le Tour de la Question," a debate-style class on current events, designed to sharpen argumentation and nuance.
- Included for all students: a French newsletter with idioms, book and podcast recommendations by level, and cultural notes.
Whatever your field law, journalism, retirement, relocation, I can meet you in it and help you become genuinely francophone.

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I love to speak French, obviously because I am French but also, because of the complexity and the beauty of this language. From Victor Hugo, then Jacques Brel or now Hocus Pocus and Stromae, I love the way French can be used, the double sense and the smartness of this language.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

Victor Hugo. Through his books and poems and his thinking. I think he is the one representative of the language's culture.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

All the expressions. They are plenty and most of the time, very funny. One of them ?
« Ne me cours pas sur le haricot ! »
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Well, this language is mine, my native language, the language of my heart.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

French is complex, obviously. We have lot of times (plus que parfait, passé composé, imparfait, conditionnel passé, présent, conditionnel présent, futur proche, futur simple … and others). The trap is to wait to be perfect to speak. Please don't. Don't be ashamed or afraid to start. Focus on the meaning and the structure will come after few try. Obviously the structure is important, but no one has it perfectly on the first try 🙂.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

Was playing guess who? With one of my student. And she told me : Non merci cheveux (no thanks hair) to ask me if the protagonist was bold. I loved it because, even if the was a very beginner she tried, and I understood.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

I'm born this way (French). But traveling helped me to develop English and Spanish, going through Dutch and German. It help me to understand how to teach French and explain it better according the structure of English or German (ex : conditionnel = would / the verb is not at the end etc.)
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

First because I have super students. Also, I do all my teaching about my student. I spend times to prepare a class, specific for you. You love Mickael Jackson ? Alright let's translate in French. You're more into politics ? Let me grab my files and let's debate. You're a beginner ? No worries, I've been a beginner in English too. If you're willing to have French sur-mesure, it's with me.
