About Ruben

I always thought that my curiosity would get the best of me. At least that’s what my father kept telling me every time I get into trouble. It has been my passion to look past what I see, to discover what lies beyond the four corners of my house, what lurks behind the last corner of our street, what life there is past the ponds, rivers and seas. That’s me in a nutshell, an ever-questioning traveler with a Peter Pan complex curious of the world around him. As I traversed the jungle of high school life my curiosity grew to a point that I instinctively searched for like-minded individuals which led me to join a local community theater group, and to my surprise I was really good at it. I was chosen to be the main character of an original play critiquing the then social concerns. I became so engrossed with theater that I began to teach and direct plays at a young age. I travelled to Palawan, Baler and Bolinao to organize community theater groups and performed with organizations such as Asian Council for People’s Culture and the renowned Philippine Educational Theater Association. It was a dream come true, a major turning point.

When I got to college everything changed. The social movement was at its height and people power dictated the country’s direction. I was caught in the rave and joined youth organizations that paved my activism. After graduation, I joined my first NGO, Tambuyog Development Center (TDC). It was there that I learned the true value of humanity. I’ve immersed myself with fisherfolk communities, educating them on the value of the environment and how to take care of their natural resources. I’ve begun to understand the reality of others who are oppressed and trapped in their own situations. My empathy grew as I engaged in their livelihood fully absorbing what a community really is. Right then I’ve decided I want more. I want to embrace a life that gives meaning, that will pursue social change amidst the indignity and inequality that plague the country. It was then that I realized, I need to be a catalyst, an advocate for social justice and equality, a path-merging lifeline to the vulnerable.

After my stint with TDC, another organization found me seeking employment as again a Trainor. PEPE which stands for Popular Education for People’s Empowerment. I met them when I joined one of their festivals called Daupan, a gathering and sharing of trainors. I was immediately hooked by the way they use creative methodologies to teach trainors of different techniques and concepts on training. In the summer of 1989, my journey of becoming a popular educator began. I started learning theories and frameworks that will create innovations in the process of learning. I was sent to China to share teaching techniques of their multigrade process, and went to Denmark to learn folk school all of which expanded not only my wisdom and knowledge but my view of how huge the world is. My curiosity was being fulfilled and I can never ask for more. My eyes opened in grandeur as I witnessed and felt an overwhelming feeling of accomplishment. My senses awakened like never before admiring the people around me. I cherished every minute and second of it like ice cream on a hot summer day or watching the sun set at a beach in Puerto Galera. It was perfect in all the essence of the word. It was my path to venture.

Ten years have passed and I felt that it’s about that time that I need to move on for more discoveries. I applied with Heifer Project International as a communications officer. The organization focuses on livelihood which I was new in terms of community work. I tried to lock myself with the staff and join their cause. It was uplifting at the moment but then certain issues with the director and the US headquarters started to break so I decided to leave. It may be a short tenure but it made me think of the other side of the coin, the corporate life. With my interest in the arts and writing I managed to land a job with an advertising company. I directed their events and wrote ad concepts including market research. I seek clients and bolster products for companies such as purefoods and whitening soap manufacturers. Slowly but surely my soul was beginning to turn green. After several years, I managed to go to the United States and try out a new life, the American life. For almost 20 years I spent working with one thing in mind…money. I felt alone and disconnected to friends and families. My life was reduced to an everyday routine. I wake up, go to work then come home to eat and sleep. It felt like I died inside and my curiosity died with it. My soul crushed in millions of pieces castrated and bound.

It was then that I decided to come home. And as I walked down the tarmac, I felt weird. I tried to get back to development work but the competition was really strict. I was old and felt obsolete. To survive I have to work in the BPO industry and because of my experience in the US I was hired, but the spark of curiosity was not there anymore. This is not what I want, I told myself. This is not what I came home for. Luckily, I had a break. The Medical Action Group had an opening for a Project Development Officer and I applied. I was hired on a contractual basis. I took it just so I can learn again and maybe, just maybe, my curiosity will spark again. But alas, it is not enough. After a year I decided I needed more experience, more learning, more interaction. I hope and I pray that the next organization that will take me in can understand my desire to help others, to regain my soul, to spark my curiosity.
