About Nathan
Hey there! My name's Nathan. I'm currently a graduate student at Harvard's school for the study of religion, but not long ago I was in your shoes, writing five-paragraph essays for my AP history classes, short answer questions for biology and chemistry, and learning how to take a college entrance exam all the while.
I got through it pretty quickly, with three tricks. The first trick was, everything I was learning in school already transferred over to the test-- I just had to identify and patch up those places where I struggled in class. The second, and more empowering trick, was that taking a test is a skill in itself that I could sharpen up, often allowing me to find the right answer when my knowledge base failed me.
And the third trick-- one which has stuck with me all my life-- is that learning how to write helped me learn how to think. No matter whether I was in biology or English class, or even showing my work in math class, learning how to write helped me learn how to express myself, and in doing so helped me reflect upon and improve the clarity of my thinking, whether to express my solution to a problem in class or my feelings in a conflict with a friend. It's a skill that began to grow in middle school, set me apart in high school, and has improved my life to this day.

My lessons are for middle and high school students seeking to learn or refine either the fundamentals of writing, like grammar and word choice, or the capacity to express oneself with words. They are also for students looking to improve their skills on college entrance exams like the SAT and ACT.
I begin writing lessons with work on creative writing, to help students connect to their ability to express their thinking and communicate it to others. I round out sessions transferring those capacities to the particular stringencies of AP writing, in which one's writing and thinking must proceed from a thesis statement through supporting evidence and interpretation.
The content of testing lessons varies based on the section that the student is training in. However, the general structure of the lesson is the same. First, we work on the student's knowledge base, transferring their in-class learning to test questions wherever possible. Second, we introduce and help students use the heuristics that successful test takers use to whittle down possible test answers so that they feel confident not only as someone who can apply their knowledge accurately, but as someone who can take a test skillfully.
