I focus on core concepts that underpin the math or science my student is working on. I find the best way to do that is not through lectures but through conversation. Almost always if a student is struggling with a specific concept they are just one 'mental block' away from grasping it. After getting the syllabus from the student, this is how a 60 minute block looks:
0:00 - 0:05 -- Greeting and finding out specific concerns (When is your next test? How did your last homework assignment/quiz go? etc.)
0:05- 0:50 -- Working together on some (not all) of the questions from homework assignments or book examples.
0:50-1:00 -- Previewing the next lesson the will be taught according to the syllabus. This makes sure that each lesson a student hears three times: briefly from me, from their professor, and again from me when we are working on their assignments.
