About Shafiq

Struggling with Maths, or aiming for an A/A? Let's make Maths finally click.

Hi, I'm Shafiq — a 1-to-1 Maths tutor specialising in IGCSE and SPM, with experience teaching primary, secondary and university students.

My approach is simple: I don't want you to memorise a formula without understanding why it works. I break difficult topics into simple steps, identify where you're struggling, and guide you through the reasoning so that you can solve similar questions independently.

With a Master's degree in Data Science and a strong background in mathematics, statistics and programming, I enjoy teaching Maths from the fundamentals rather than relying purely on memorisation. I also received a Yayasan Telekom Malaysia scholarship for my studies.

What I can help you with

• IGCSE Mathematics
• SPM Mathematics
• Primary & lower secondary Mathematics
• Foundation / university-level Mathematics & Statistics
• Homework and assignment support
• Exam preparation and revision
• Building confidence in Maths from the fundamentals

How I teach

1. Understand → Don't memorise

I explain the why behind formulas and methods, using simple examples before moving towards exam-style questions.

2. Identify the gap

If you're struggling with a topic, we first identify the exact concept causing the problem instead of simply doing more questions.

3. Guided practice

I work through questions with you step-by-step, gradually reducing the amount of help until you can solve them independently.

4. Adapt to you

Some students need visual explanations. Others prefer examples, repetition or working through challenging questions. I adjust my teaching style according to your learning pace and needs.

5. Build confidence

My goal isn't just to help you get through one worksheet. I want you to leave the lesson thinking:

"I actually understand how to do this."

My teaching experience

• 40+ students taught through Superprof
• 7 five-star reviews on Superprof
• Tutored students and peers since secondary school at MRSM
• Worked professionally at a tuition centre in Kuala Lumpur, teaching primary and secondary students
• Served as a university student assistant, helping peers understand academic subjects
• Experience teaching students with different learning styles and ability levels

Students and parents have particularly appreciated my patience, clear explanations, adaptability and ability to make learning more engaging.

️ Lesson format

Lessons are conducted 1-to-1, either online or in person where applicable.

I generally recommend 1.5–2 hours per session, especially for students preparing for exams, as this gives us enough time to explain concepts, practise questions and review mistakes without rushing.

Whether you're currently struggling with Maths, trying to move from a B to an A, or aiming for an A*, I'll tailor the lessons around your current level and goals.

Send me a message and tell me your current level, syllabus (IGCSE/SPM), and the topics you're struggling with. We can start from there.

How I teach

I believe students perform better in Maths when they understand the concept instead of simply memorising formulas and steps. My lessons are therefore designed to build understanding first, followed by guided practice and exam application.

1. Understand the concept

I start by explaining the topic in a simple and intuitive way. Rather than immediately jumping into questions, I make sure the student understands what the concept means, why the method works, and when to use it.

2. Identify the student's gaps

Every student has different strengths and weaknesses. I pay attention to how the student approaches questions and identify the specific concepts or steps causing difficulty. This allows us to focus our time where it is most needed.

3. Learn through guided problem-solving

We then work through questions together, starting with straightforward examples before progressing to more challenging problems. I encourage students to explain their thinking so I can identify misunderstandings and correct them along the way.

4. Build independent problem-solving skills

My goal is not for students to depend on me for every question. As they become more comfortable with a topic, I gradually reduce my guidance and encourage them to solve problems independently and explain their own reasoning.

5. Apply knowledge to exam questions

For IGCSE and SPM students, lessons can include syllabus-based and exam-style questions. We practise recognising question types, selecting the appropriate method, avoiding common mistakes and working accurately under time pressure.

What does a typical lesson look like?

A typical 1-to-1 lesson may follow this structure:

Review → Learn → Practise → Correct → Challenge

We begin with a quick review of previous material or any questions the student is currently struggling with. I then introduce or revisit the new concept, followed by guided practice. We review mistakes together to understand why they happened, before moving on to more challenging questions.

The exact lesson structure is flexible and changes according to the student's needs. A student who is struggling with fundamentals may spend more time building conceptual understanding, while a student preparing for an upcoming exam may focus more heavily on exam-style questions and timed practice.

My teaching style

I am focused, approachable and adaptive. Students are encouraged to ask questions whenever something is unclear, and I am happy to explain the same idea in different ways until it makes sense.

I particularly enjoy helping students who feel that they are "not good at Maths". In many cases, the problem is not a lack of ability, but a gap in understanding or confidence. My aim is to help students develop both.

With experience tutoring peers since secondary school, working at a tuition centre in Kuala Lumpur, and supporting university students as a student assistant, I have taught students with different abilities, learning speeds and needs.

My academic background also allows me to approach Mathematics from a strong analytical perspective. As a Master's graduate in Data Science, I place a strong emphasis on logical thinking, understanding relationships between concepts and developing problem-solving skills that students can apply beyond a single question.

Who are my lessons suitable for?

I teach:

Primary students — building strong mathematical foundations and confidence.

Secondary students — including IGCSE and SPM Mathematics, with support for schoolwork, difficult topics, revision and exam preparation.

Foundation and degree students — Mathematics, Statistics and related quantitative subjects.

Lessons are available daily from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM. I generally recommend 1–1.5 hours per session, although the duration can be adjusted depending on the student's age, goals and learning needs.

My goal is simple: help you understand Maths well enough that you can solve the next question without me.
