About Alasdair
My interest in Japanese started in an unexpected place: I met a Japanese hitchhiker while on a busking road trip through New Zealand, and that encounter sparked my curiosity about Japan and its language. Years later, after working as an engineer, I decided to move to Japan and properly immerse myself. I studied Japanese in Tokyo, lived in a Japanese dormitory and worked at a café in the center of the city. All of these were environments functioned completely in Japanese, we were even taught Japanese in Japanese!
I discovered that what made the head spinning process enjoyable for me was immersing myself in content I genuinely liked, especially Japanese comedy and entertainment. Learning stopped feeling like a chore and became a way to enjoy things I was already interested in.
There's a Japanese phrase I like: 好きこそものの上手なれ
(You'll get good at what you enjoy)
I now want to help other learners find that same enjoyment and make progress through Japanese in a way that feels natural, interesting and genuinely fun.

My approach is simple: we start with what you want to achieve in Japanese, then find content you actually enjoy that can help you get there. Whether you want to improve your conversation, understand Japanese media, follow your favorite music, prepare for a trip, or work towards a qualification, I’ll help you find engaging Japanese material that fits your level and interests. We can use that content together to build vocabulary, grammar, listening and speaking skills without making every lesson feel like a textbook. Lessons are usually 60 minutes and are tailored to each student’s goals, interests and current level.
